Interesting times in Asia

The Chinese population are marking the "Hungry Ghost Festival"
It is traditionally believed that during the seventh month of the lunar calender, the gates of Hell open and the spirits of dead ancesters visit the living, and roam the earth.
Offerings are burnt to appease beings believed to be visiting the human earth from the nether world.
I feel honored to witness this.

No pics..you can google "Hungry Ghost Festival". What I see is people burning incensse, building small fires all over the place, and putting paper cash, paper laptops, paper cars- etc.. in the fires. Apparently ..in case their relative who is visiting needs these things. The funerals are differant here too. Services can last up to 1 week, and a pavillion is rented (the pavillion is right outside my window). Guests come and go,, eat,,laugh, cry. They also have an assortment of musical instruments scattered about. Someone may pick up 2 sticks and tap then together, and someone else may pick up a drum. At times they actually manage to put together some kind of 'loose jam'. The reason for the music is to let Heavan know that someone s coming. This is a cool place, very interesting, and rich in coulture.

I wanted to take some pics, but my wife told me that would be considered extremely rude.

Laptops so they can surf porn? Can you also burn a couple of Penthouse and Hustler magazines so the dead have something to play with?

But aren't their deceased relatives going to be mad when they find out all this stuff they got is only paper?

I don't think they allow it there. Not even Cosmopolitan is allowed there but they may have relaxed the standards.

Books like Hustler still arent happening here. Heck, my wife had never even heard of the 'Rolling Stones' before I met her..About as wild as she got before that was listening to 'Bon-Jovi'

A lot of magazines and publications that they deem subversive are removed from the "allowed" list. Do you wonder why my wife's Pol Sci instructor expressly forbade any recordings only when discussing issues about Singapore?

ISD raid of 13 August 1992
Seven officers from the Internal Security department (ISD) raided the offices of Business Times (BT) after the latter had published vital economic figures deemed to be sensitive. After questioning and further investigations, the ISD brought the matter to court. BT was fined for having breached the Official Secrets Act.

After having you pointing out some things to me about Government suppression (in another post)..I have begun reading 'Men In White"...to further educate myself. (the book is about Lee Kuan Yew,and the forming of the PAP) Do you think there are so many restrictions in order to keep any threat of communism from returning here?

Ask your wife what she knows about WWII. Would be most interesting to compare what she was taught (I'm assuming she is from Singapore) vs. western teachings vs. Chinese teachings (hint: Chinese engineer I spoke to knows nothing of Hitler).

Well, I can tell you it was a real threat growing up. Is there that much of a communism threat going on right now? I don't think so but the Internal Security Act is still in place and very handy to use to deal with inconvenient opinions.
