They are a decent low maintenance car the 3 liter engine isn't mind boggling but it plenty peppy. There were only two things we didn't like. The MPG was sort of crappy for a 3ltr averaging about 19 and............the brake dust that accumulated on the wheels. Jeesh even after a couple days of driving. We didn't keep it past 2005 it was passed onto the kiddos. I still do have my 92 325i which is a great little car for goofing off in.

My cousin has had an 02 for a long time, nice looking car. I don't think he has had many problems with it.

Don't overheat it and you'll be fine. There's lot's of plastic bits in the cooling system so its pretty common.

Only buy one with total service records - preferably from a dealer. Seriously; an old BMW can be expensive as hell to keep running.

My EX GF has a 2000 328i and it has been quite trouble free, my boss has a 330CI and she loves is. But it eats tires like you won't believe.
The thing to watch out for on those are crappy plastic on the cooling components. The Ex's car had a tiny leak around the radiator vent screw so I went to tighten it up and it snapped off with very little force as it was so brittle. I had to replace the whole assembly. They do look great and they are a whole heap of fun to drive. I would consider one.
