Sounds like a plan! Once you make the adjustment to a smoother more comfortable albeit heavier bike you'll really enjoy the Yamaha. Watch your tire pressures and keep them at the upper extreme of the posted range. On a bike this heavy that's the best and safest way to long tire life.

If I get the full$2400 for a trade I'll be happy.

Sell the Sporty on CL for 2400 and make somebody happy that they dont have to go to a dealer and pay 2800 for a 2400 dollar bike. Unless the dealer pays you cash for your bike, then you are usually getting nowhere near what they tell you they are giving you for your trade in. Then you have cash to barter with and you might get a better deal.

I was thinking about that but I don't know how much time I have. I don't think it will sit in the showroom for long. Unless they let me put a deposit on it.
It's only 8:00 now, I'll give them a call when they open at 9:00.

The motorcycle business is in the absolute dumps these days, that bike isn't going anywhere on you. I suggest you open with an offer of $6,000 even - bet you can get it for below $7,000.

He did agree on $7500 but the won't take the Harley as a trade in. So now I have to sell it on my own on craigslist.
How much do you think I can get for a '98 XL with 30,000 miles on it.
Not so good issues with it:
Maybe needing new lifters, broken choke knob mount, needs a rear tire, small ding in tank.
Also I bought the bike used in '98. The guy said he drove it around foor 3 or 400 miles and the speedo broke so he took it to Harley and they replaced it. But the *********s at harley didn't move up the new speedo. Instead they put "Not original miles", or something like that, on the title. The frekkin retards! I hate harley mechanics. Anyway how much of an issue is this?
Do you think I can get $2500? Maybe ask for $2800 and take $2500? I would be happy to get 2.5K.
I have the original seat and exhaust to throw in as well.
The good part is it has low mileage, Vance & Hines pipes, K&N air filter and saddle bags.

The dealers always try to clip you Sportsters. The real truth is that any Sportster of about any given model year, if it is a 1200cc model, will bring about $5,000 in a private sale because there are so may Harley wannabees who just don't have the big bread for the big bikes but just might be able to scrape the 5k up for the 1200, which is the minimum engine size allowed in most biker gangs, and is also a good bike to chop. The dealer is going to make his money on the deal selling the XL for twice what he paid for it, after his shop tunes it up. If it is worth the trouble to you, I bet any bike shop can get it running right for a few hundred bucks, then list it on Ebay for $5800 tops and take $4900 bottom. Does it have the dual disc front brakes? If it is an 883, disregard everything I said, and let the dealer have it......

4900 for a 30k sporty on ebay today? Ain't happenin'.
Not a lot of interest. FL might be a little different. But I don't see 4900.

x2 on the 883 comment.

Sportys like his dont sell much above KBB in OK & KS. The big make a ton on your HD wave is done, unless you have something special. best bet is to fix the broken choke knob mount and try to get the title mileage amended and sell it as far over BB as he can get. These days, unless it is pristine, it aint gonna be much....

Oh, as far as referring to outlaw biker clubs as "gangs"; don't go shooting your mouth off like that in public. Real 1% patch holders consider themselves club members and they do not play by Shop Forum nice rules. As a civilian, best to avoid them, but don't call them gang members or, even worse, "bro" to their face; because you are not.

Yes it is an 883. Be nice to me it's my first bike.
I'm trying to upgrade, hopefully it will work out.

I'm all shaky-scare-die over "gangs" vs "clubs". I've owned motorcycles my whole life, and I ain't your "bro" either.

hey boy, I am not posing any threats to you, and, like you, I have ridden all my life. I have no club affiliation, nor do I wish one. I dont even ride HD anymore. Just that, having known quite well for many years various club members, that if you call them a gang member, they might just break your jaw. I'm just sayin, YMMV

have a good day, internet tough guy....

nothing wrong with an 883. Cool thing is, when you wear it out, you can plop a 1200 kit on it and ride like crazy....

Nothing but a street gang with questionable hygiene, bad taste in clothes, and worse taste in bikes. Most of them are geezers now, anyway.

What I was referring to was the hundreds of neighborhood motorcycle gangs one finds in the large cities all across America. Houston is rife with them. And they are indeed "gangs" - organized criminal enterprises made up of an initiated membership. We have Latino and black motorcycle gangs who gravitate around their local strip joints, until the Bandidos stop in and tell them to join up, move out or get shot - except of course the gangs that are so bad not even the Bandidos want to tangle with them. They all have one thing in common, the bikes have to be 1200cc and up. Owning a Harley is giving way as a requirement, especially among the black gangs, who seem to favor the rice burners.
