And thanks to DAW_TWO...
Thanks to DAW_two I now have a new obsession - figuring out how to get a diesel powered small/mid-size truck/SUV.
Lemme try to explain: I've recently traveled on business to Memphis (among other places) and hooked up with Mr. David (a.k.a. DAW_TWO) who was kind enough (tongue and cheek) to showcase his projects. One of them was outfitting a nice 4x4 the Dodge Dakota with a Cummins 4DT engine - something I've been wishing for since I don't know when... thank you very much.... Well, Mr. Weiss - you've awaken the 'deamon' in me - kind of like the deamon that got me to start my biodiesel brewing and eventually led to the MB obsession which I'm still nurturing - thanks to you I can sense that I'm on the verge of being posessed once again - thanks a lot!... :) Curious if any members of the forum here have ventured into the diesel conversion in trucks/SUVs of other kinds - I'm sure some of you have - care to share results/progress? The vehicle that I fancy at this point would be a Toyota Landcruiser ('84-'86 FJ60) with a diesel motor (4-6?)and a manual transmission. A little Ford Ranger would also be great for me. That would be my winter driver and my adventure vehicle.... ah, one can only dream. Seriously though, was great meeting ya and thanks for the beer - I owe you one next time I'm in Memphis! James |
Lots of Landcruisers out there with diesels. IH8MUD forum has a lot on the topic. A fair number of 4BT conversions have been done into LC's. Noisy and shaky seem to be common words to describe the results. I'd give some thought to an Isuzu or Fuso cabover 4 cyl diesel conversion into an LC.

Don't count out a small Perkins diesel either.

I put a small Isuzu turbo diesel into a Datsun 1 ton pick up about 20 years ago. It still gets used a bit on the farm. Like the Benz diesels, its high revving & so no diff change was necessary.
We also have a Ford F750 tray (22') truck with a perkins 6354, in the place of the old 351 V8. It is great for transporting cattle & hay. Never gives trouble, gets an oil change & filters once in a blue moon, fires up first time even if its been sitting for a year. I would like to do a diesel conversion on a unimog but the diffs are too low ratio & I dont think you could swap out the crown wheels & pinions with MB car ones. |
No conversions yet but I have this vision of a 50's-60's vintage, matte black, air-bagged Cadillac limousine with a chipped Duramax and narrowed 1 ton axle in my head and it won't go away. :silly:
I'd love to drop a 616 in a 30's pickup for picking up lumber, mulch, dump runs, etc. |

How about an FJ Cruiser (FJ/60/62/80) with this beast in it: :o

Just wonder what the parts availability would be for this kind of engine... |
