Can you dispose of diff oil with motor oil?
There's a few local recycling drop offs with oil bins to pour your used motor oil in ... does anyone know if it's OK to put oil from the diff in there too? I can't find anything on the county website that says if there's a weight limit of the oil being recycled. I don't want to be that jerk that puts the wrong oil in the bin.

Hydraulic oil is just that, oil with additional additives. I have always included it with engine oil, ATF, etc. when recycling, and the individuals who receive this oil have never told me otherwise.
|
In a nutshell...yes
|
I don't see why not. I asked my garage owning buddy, where I dispose of most of my oil at, about a bunch of different oils (hydraulic, diff., asst. machinery oils we use, etc.) and he said they were all ok to pour into the tank.

Im going to--and im not gonna ask for permission.

I even add coolant to the mix...never had a problem with it.

What difference does it make? Allmost all of that waste oil gets burned as fuel in asphalt plants. I'd imagine that the coolants and other non-combustibles get centrifuged out before it goes to the burner nozzles.

Oils and alcohol are a bit different. If you're going to make the effort to recycle, why not make sure you're not contaminating the whole container. Wal-mart takes it all back and they DON'T let you dump anti-freeze into the oil bin, but they do mix tranny fluid, gear oil, motor oil, etc. Maybe it is 'fuged out, maybe not. I think there's a reason that oil and antifreeze are collected separately. |
Thanks, all. Good to know. I wasn't really sure what the recycling process was. I kind of assumed it would be OK since it all started as the same substance, but you never know. I do think our county says no coolant ... that is supposed to be dropped off on specific has waste pickup days. Though I'm sure there's a bit of coolant in a lot of people's motor oil so it wouldn't be the end of the world.
I will say the pour-in bins are great. I hated having to bottle it up and take it to Pep Boys. Now I just collect it in a big jug and every once in a while drive into town and pour. |
It all gets burned up, doesn't matter. I dump my gun cleaners in with all the rest.
Waste oil furnaces will burn just about anything. |
No issue with the oils, but keep the coolant out. Wreaks havoc with waste oil burners, at least on the scale I am familiar with.

The local Autozone was allowing me to put diesel oil with the conventional oil but does not allow it anymore. My city recycling will not allow mixing diesel with conventional oil either.

The person at Autozone was one of the bosses and she seemed to know what she was talking about because she told me the things I could mix with the oil (which I have since forgotten). Now you got my curiosity going. I'll post if I find any reason for not mixing or accepting diesel oil. |
