While keeping your mind open to the "possibility" of a higher intelligence. How do you know we're not some long running science experiment in a vastly large petri dish?

If you saw it on TV, or at the movies, it MUST be true.

Based on probabilities, we can assume that there are other intelligent beings in the universe. Just like a dog exists and so do we, we might be a lower intelligence species to them. Just because they are higher in intelligence doesn't mean they have the desire or ability to be this god.

I agree its possible but I think it is a moot point since we are unable to answer or even guess intelligently (same with deity for that matter). What I love about space is how incredibly humbling it is - we are nothing more than a grain of sand in the entire ocean and even that may be an overexaggeration.

I read a different article about this which was titled something like "Hawking changes position on God"....while I've not followed his writings extensively, the article didn't really give justification for any change in his position. Did he at some point in the past posit an intelligent creator in his theories?

Which explains why religion is so intoxicating. It gives you the idea that somebody out there who is very powerful loves you.

You're nobody 'til somebody loves you
You're nobody 'til somebody cares.
You may be king, you may possess the world and it's gold,
But gold won't bring you happiness when you're growing old.
The world still is the same, you never change it,
As sure as the stars shine above;
You're nobody 'til somebody loves you,
So find yourself somebody to love.

The world still is the same, you never change it,
As sure as the stars shine above;
You're nobody 'til somebody loves you,
So find yourself somebody, find yourself somebody,
Find yourself somebody to love.

AFAIK He has never changed his position on God--Hawking has deliberately avoided public discourse on religion in the past. Rather, he met with the Pope JPII at one point to discuss whether or not his studies were congruent with those in the bible after he began getting a ton of press. The result was that all the way back until the Big Bang, the Bible could be interpreted as similar to science. I believe what the article implies is that he has gone beyond the big bang and therefore has reached the boundaries of Christian scripture. When you think about it, they are just two competing theories, Hawking merely has known physics and mathematics on his side.

For those who believe no explanation is necessary.

For those who don't no explanation is possible.

We'll all find out soon enough.
