my hapless father decided to get the coals started up with paint thinner once. i do believe his eyebrows and the patio awning were never quite the same - and the steaks weren't so good either.

well, it was rather comical, but we children had to keep a straight face at the time, or perhaps dad would have sprinkled us with turpentine too.

Weber Kettle + charcoal + lighter fluid. Soak, light, then cover.
Simmer about 15-20 minutes. Remove cover and LARGE fireball erupts. My guess is that with the lid closed the lighter fluid vaporized, but there was insufficient oxygen for combustion ( in technical terms the atmosphere was above the upper explosive limit), which condition was corrected when the cover was lifted. Happened at a friends house 20 years ago, and the memory is vivid.

I ran out of charcoal lighter fluid and used B100 to start the grill. I mean it is not a HAZARDOUS chemical, right? The darn B100 was almost impossible to light! I ended up using a MAP gas torch to get it going! The stuff started to burn, throwing black smoke everywhere and the neighborhood smelled like linseed oil! Oh once it did burn it got the charcoal going and everything worked out.

I found out one time that you don't pour gasoline on a giant ant hill and then throw a match on it.

Pieces of railroad ties...
NEVER USE PIECES OF RAILROAD TIES AS FIREWOOD!!! They burn HOTTER than hell... My little brother and I found out the hard way and ALMOST burned up a railway bridge in the process of learning that little bit of knowledge... Gas grill or charcoal briquettes in a Webber...that's it for me...
