Old Iphone question
10 year old son acquired (for free) a first generation I-phone. We do not plan to get him a service contract at this time but he would like to use the other features of the phone.
He is able to connect to our home wireless network and get to the web. I was surprised, but he showed me. He wants to download some music and some apps but he hits a roadblock when he is asked to enter the previous owner's password. We don't have it (and can't get it). Is there a way to reset the phone to the original factory state? I don't have an I-phone but recall you can reset something with a paperclip. Do you think a trip to the AT&T store will help? We have other phone contracts with them. Would they be willing and able to wipe the phone clean without buying additional service from them?

Download itunes. Sync phone and press "return to factory settings". If you don't have one, setup an itunes account and sync it to the phone.

The store should do it...for nothing.

Without a data plan from AT&T, the old phone will work as a iPod Touch, once you do the reset and sync it with a computer running iTunes.
Also, there are "jailbreak" programs which will expand compatabilities . . . but that's all I'll say about that. |

I just received an iPhone 4 and am using my iPhone 3G for this purpose. I can still use it to retrieve email, as a web browser (both courtesy of my home network) and the iPod section works perfectly.

Load Skype and it becomes a phone again.

That should work, but you will lose any apps that were installed under the old account. My old iPhone 3G was being used as an iPod for a while, until one of my kids decided she liked it better than her blackberry and had the AT&T store transfer her number to it; now it's a phone again.

Check out the omniphone app. It will allow the phone to be used as a phone again with wifi... Be sure to read the terms and conditions on the app before you claim it doesn't work.

We'll play around with the apps that can make it a phone.
