Reference SCORE: My new Daimler Benz O 309 D motor-home/work vehicle post# 116.

I use a iPhone app (navigon) as my primary gps. One less device to deal with.

Buy yourself a good book of maps Roy !!
One day these little men in China will actually discover that parts of the world are not over populated & you cant just ask some one directions in the middle of no where !!
We have an el cheapo MIO, Its was very cheap, works well in towns, but is not so good in the country. It has included some roads that havent been built yet!!

Down here we tend to look things up on whereis & print a few maps. Maybe Google maps would be good as well.
I thought you would have had your laptop & wireless with you on the trip !

I'll second that, for sure.

If you must go electronic - go Garmin.

And you wont. For obvious reasons.

Back when I was dumb enough to teach primary flight. I loved to take a student on a long XC flight and let them get all settled in to watching the GPS map move on by.
I’d reach up and turn the thing off and ask where we were.
I never got a good reply.
Usually, more of a panic response.

And God forbid they ever yelled “Hey ! What’d ya do that for ?!”

I really like my TomTom. I also use Google Maps Navigation on my phone a lot. I have a Google phone to run it on.

It was broken before the trip.

I wreck cell phones at work, drop in antifreeze, oil, diesel, ATF, cleaning solvent, fall into running engine, etc, etc...

Cell phone insurance will not replace it every month.

Buying 12+ new smart phones per year is not in the budget...

Then a tomtom or such is the way to go. It will stay suction cup'd to your windshield

That's the best thing you can do to a mobile phone (in my opinion)

Yup, I also keep a stand alone GPS installed in my car. They have become dirt cheap.

Ones with text to speech are best, they will read the street name, IE "Turn left at Middlebelt Drive" not "Turn left".

Definitely, but they probably all do that by now. I also like having it paired with my car audio (bluetooth) so it fades the music when it gives directions.
