Wall Street (Movie)

I think it was one of the greats sequels wise. The original has always been one of my favorites. The Gekko spin on today's times was just fantastic.

This line resonated with me. Gekko giving a presentation promoting his book:

“You’re all pretty much f*#.” You’re the Ninja generation. No income, no jobs, no assets. You have a lot to look forward to.”

...and the Charlie Sheen cameo. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it.

That's a great quote:

“You’re all pretty much f*#.” You’re the Ninja generation. No income, no jobs, no assets. You have a lot to look forward to.”

I think that someone's reaction to that is interesting; some people would find that scary, other people would see endless opportunities.

I need to see the movie.

You should:

Some memorable quotes there.

Gordon Gekko:

"You're walking around blind without a cane, pal. A fool and his money are lucky enough to get together in the first place."

~~~~~~
Bud Fox: How much is enough?
Gordon Gekko: It's not a question of enough, pal. It's a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn't lost or made, it's simply transferred from one perception to another.
~~~~~~

"The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bull****. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, the price per paper clip. We pick that rabbit out of the hat while everybody sits out there wondering how the hell we did it. Now you're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy, are you buddy? It's the free market. And you're a part of it. You've got that killer instinct. Stick around pal, I've still got a lot to teach you. "

The "Greed is good" speech is a classic metaphor, for the "go go 1980's", some think it is for today too.

Gordon Gekko: [at the Teldar Paper stockholder's meeting]

Well, I appreciate the opportunity you're giving me Mr. Cromwell as the single largest shareholder in Teldar Paper, to speak.

Well, ladies and gentlemen we're not here to indulge in fantasy but in political and economic reality. America, America has become a second-rate power. Its trade deficit and its fiscal deficit are at nightmare proportions. Now, in the days of the free market when our country was a top industrial power, there was accountability to the stockholder.

The Carnegies, the Mellons, the men that built this great industrial empire, made sure of it because it was their money at stake. Today, management has no stake in the company! All together, these men sitting up here own less than three percent of the company.

And where does Mr. Cromwell put his million-dollar salary? Not in Teldar stock; he owns less than one percent. You own the company. That's right, you, the stockholder. And you are all being royally screwed over by these, these bureaucrats, with their luncheons, their hunting and fishing trips, their corporate jets and golden parachutes.

Cromwell: This is an outrage! You're out of line,Gekko!

Gordon Gekko: Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and I still can't figure it out.

One thing I do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, and I'll bet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents. The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest.

Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that I've been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars. Thank you.

I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.

Skid gives "Wall Street comes home to Lassie" - 4-STARS for ACTING, not content.

Gordon Gekko has gone milk toast. I expected him to start bawling for family - all the whille putting nearly another $2 billion dollars of net worth on the board for his new firm. Gekko also put the leftist-spin on absolving the current regime in charge of Washington, for the recent/current financial crisis causalship.

Eli Wallach actor "Julie" also played the greasy Mexican amatuer bandit from Clint Eastwood - Lee Van Cleef's "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" film from the '60s - I kept seeing the greasy Mexican bandit charter:

Eli Wallach - Circa 1966 & Clint Eastwood Wallach called Eastwood; "Blonde" in the movie.

And if that "Jake" character and Josh Brolin call that "motorcycle-riding" an old biker like me could show both of 'em something other than that ride through Central Park BS. I missed Sheen appearance, but I swear I saw one of the left of leftist moviemakers; Oliver Stone, in a couple scenes. If you like chick-flicks, bawling, and dark, literally dark-lighting movie scenes and acting - you'll love Gekko II. If you want reality, watch Road Runner vs. Coyote re-run cartoons. There was very little an aspiring leftist/socialist could glean about anything from Gekko II, but perhaps feeling more depressed about the state of finances in this country.

I was in apparel business for the first 10 years of my sales agency repping business - and I swear there had to be a million dollars worth of mens dress outerwear and pricey men's haircuts from costuming budgeted.

I saw this at a drive-in along I-45, 30+ miles south of Dallas. I joined a bunch of friends, some new and many old for our semi-annual drive-in theatre night. 73* and 90% humidity..... What fun!

The new Wall Street movie; "Gekko Comes Home To Lassie" one ups that quote to this:

The new (Bud Fox) character, "Jake" asks Gekko's adversary and Jake's new boss and high-roller, played by Josh Brolin; "What's your number?" Brolin answers; "$300,000.00" (Jake's salary) "that's what we start new guys at." Jake says; "No, what's YOUR number? Everyone has a number of dollars you need to walk away from all this Wall Street stuff?" Brolin answers; "MORE..." LOVED IT!!!!!

Joe. I had not yet stopped and thought of the political message of the movie, and you're pretty spot on. I can understand why someone would be disappointed from that standpoint.

I have seen people go to jail for white collar victimless crimes and come out completely different people. Federal prison does that.

The message from Hollywood's left wing eletists was delivered by a real-life left wing messenger, Douglas. It was entertaining, nonetheless.

Being a drive-in, as in health clubs, the soundtrack could be delivered to your FM radio. The 8, or is it 10 Bose speakers in the E300 Mercedes-Benz did a good job.

Perhaps I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have, but the formula for Jake bringing down Brolin, and how Gekko all of a sudden was sitting at the CEO conference room table of his own brokerage firm, with a screen reflecting a value of $1,987,000,000.00 dollars escaped me. And WTF was with this Eli Wallach "Julie" fossil-character doing with the bird-flying sounds, claiming he was even aware of 1929's economic disaster technically in real time/first person? Bogus. He was a 14 year old knee pant wearing, clueless teen in 1929.

The save-the-planet acting assignment given to Gekko's sweet and humble $100 million dollar trust fund daughter was as predictably juxt opposed to her Father Gordon Gekko's mindset, as Jake's total focus on more save-the-planet green investment plans and ideas.

The film was put together quite well, but they put together the wild and hairy taxi ride through Manhattan with the crazed Middle-Eastern driver, much moreso than the motorcycle contest between Jake and Brolin.

What the h#ll was the movie's message of the crazed taxi driver and frightening ride for Gekko and Jake???

And the Susan Sarandon character of all things? Nice residential real estate though!

Well it's a Stone film so of course it's going to be left wing. I was wondering how he managed to keep the black helicopters out of each scene, until one actually showed up of course

Ultimately it's Hollywood, and entertainment. Don't expect it to explain the universe in a couple of hours. More an entertaining vignette of various aspects of life in the chimerical "fast lane".

In answer to the question about the Sarandon character. It thought she was rather good. Perfect portayal of the clueless types who've never opened a history book in their lives and think "property always goes up". Actually I think Stone made a good point re history by contrasting the vacuous mindset of the Sarandon types with the Tulips.

The first one back in the 80's was a great movie. It was on AMC this morning actually.

"Greed is good" was the most popular quote. Not sure if anyone watches the stock market channel or is a stock owner but if you watch CNBC everyday like I do you will remember about a month or so ago the topic of discussion was greed. They played this part of the movie. I have not seen the second one yet. Maybe this weekend.

Check AMC's TV listing. It was on this morning. A true motivator for a Sunday morning.
