thoughts on a gun

I've taken my wife and son to the range 2x so far. They both loved it. We take turns shooting my sons .22 rifle with scope then we hit the handguns. I borrowed my father's .22 Ruger and my wife seems to like to shoot that one. Then we shot my father's .25 Auto Raven Arms P-25. It is a very small pistol (pocket gun) in a light caliber. My son is 7 so it fits his hands well and the trigger pull is very light. I then let him shoot my .45 Auto AMT Backup. Although the AMT is also a pocket pistol the kick is way too much for him and the trigger pull is terrible.

So, I am looking into a .22 caliber, small frame, semi-auto pistol so my son can have some fun at the range.

There is a local gun shop that has a Beretta 21A in a .22 cal. It is used and they want $220. I think it is a good deal but I am still looking. Anyone have any ideas or experience? I would like to spend under $200.

Can't go wrong with a Beretta. Quality firearm. Don't know much about .22 pricing. High Standard would be another, but might be a bit heavy for the boy.

Smith and Wesson made a nice semi auto .22 a few years back. I think it was just called the 22. I picked mine up for $149. It was 15-18 years ago though.

TX Jake- I agree on the high standard. I got my dads when he passed and it weighs what my 1911 does!!

yes, I think that might have been intentional as the services used them as indoor range training guns, prior to .45 range fire. We had some beautiful ones in the ROTC Armory in college and also had some fine M1s and M14s....none the less, the HS is a fine pistol. I want to find one of the Spec Ops ones from the Vietnam era with the threads for the silencer on them.

I usually suggest you take a trip to a gun range that not only sells guns but rents them. That way you can try before you buy. I didn't know if the G23 would work out for the wife. Went to a range and rented one. Now she likes it and we installed a Crimson Trace laser sight. It is integrated into the gun so it isn't cheap but it works well.

Downside is that you won't be able to try every guy but what you get is probably going to be ok if they have a large enough selection. No sense in buying a gun and finding you hate it. Dad has been shooting for 60+ years. Bought a S&W Sigma and it was OK at the shop but after shooting 10 rounds thru it, he hated it. Guess what, he had to trade it in and take a beating.

I'd look at the Ruger MK II .22 auto pistol. Not much goes wrong with them.

That's the gun my dad gave me when I was a kid, I remember the day like yesterday, even the price tag, $79 at Sears Roebuck. Not just a good gun, a damned fine gun.

I used to work on guns for a living. I do own a Ruger MK I auto pistol myself. Its been a while since I did work on gun for a living. I also liked the Browning Buckmark. Make sure it has a metal magazine catch. I think I did work on some S&W .22, Colt Woodsmans and maybe a High Standard. I don't remeber any majors problems with any of them. I'd get whatever fits your sons hands, and you can afford.
I might alos look at .22 revolvers. I am not as knowlegable on these though. I do like the Ruger Single action ones though. They are well made.
Tom
