Great Escapes.

Stories of escaping from captors. We all know about the most famous of all (The Great Escape) But what others are out there?

I was particurally intrigued by this one...

More of a rescue then an escape, but reading the story you posted about the Russians reminds me of this story.

Naw, the greatest escape I ever made was from this crazed woman named Glenda. Joined the Army and ran like a scared dog from her. She ended up marrying one of my mates and squirting out 6 or 7 kids. Aged that poor guy FAST! Looked like he was 50 when he was 30. I still sweat at times when I think of how close of an escape it was.

She sure was mighty fine looking, just freakin' nuts and kid crazy.

Oh yeah I remember that one. What's amazing is that they planned the entire thing in just one week.

The snippet on the Mercedes 600 was also very interesting

Deiter Dengler, US Navy Spad pilot. Shot down over Laos in 1966. Prisoner for about 4 months. Escaped and rescued after 23 days on the run.

Yikes he was lucky! Amazing how many times friendly forces were directly overhead yet refused to call out rescue teams.

Sadly though I can understand the position of the pilots overhead. From then air you usually just can't tell who is signaling you. The last thing you want is to land a helicopter in an open field only to have enemy forces ambush it.

Scott O'Grady had lots of cover for his rescue in Bosnia. Marine cover. The best kind

Evading capture/escape:

BAT-21 - Iceal Hambleton – Vietnam, Longest rescue operation in Air Force history and numerous rescuers’ lives lost in the process. Book and later Hollywood’s version of the same name!

LT. General “Vinegar Joe” Stillwell - WWII Burma, I don’t know if there is even a book specifically about this but it is referenced in many accounts of the theatre and time period. He led the walkout of nearly 100 including the entire US command/liaison mission to Chiang Kai Shek, without loosing anyone.

Actual escape from captivity:

Treblinka Concentration Camp WWII, The only successful Jewish uprising against the “Final Solution” very few survivors of the uprising and very, very few successful escapee’s only 3 or 4: a somewhat romanticized version of events in Jean François Steiner’s book” Treblinka. The book is often criticized by Treblinka survivors as not stark and real enough. Only survivor recollections of the event as the Nazi’s obliterated any and all evidence of the uprising soon after it happened.

I can't remember the name of the movie, I thnk "Eagles" was in the title.
A supposedly true (more or less) story, WW2. Germans capture a scientist who has a lot of knowledge of things atomic, but he is disguised. They put him in an "escape=proof" castle in the Alps ( commanded by Lloyd Bridges?) while they check his ID. Allies get a pilot ( James Garner?) captured, and sent to the same prison camp. He convinces the other prisoners to help build a glider thinking they will draw lots to see who gets to go. In the end he reveals the plan and they shoot off the roof of the castle and fly to freedom as the Gestapo in coming in the front door.
True or not, its a great story.

That one's called "The Birdmen".
Great flick.

I like the beginning where the Germans are driving the guy up to the place and tell him something like: "The only way you can escape this place is to grow wings and fly out."

Cool what can be done with lots and lots of potato starch.
Launched it by dropping a cast iron bathtub connected to the nose by a rope.

Hollywood version of historical fiction but based on some factual events!

Wow. I did not know that.
That's pretty cool. How they pulled that off without getting caught...
Love the movie, but didn't know it's history.
Thanks.

That is what's truly amazing about some of these escapes...the things that these people were able to do right under the noses of the guards and even more amazing, the ingenuity that many of them used in the face of limited supplies.
