HP Slate 500: Win7 Powered

$799 8.9" Intel Atom Powered with 2 Cameras

Priced at $799, the Slate 500, a Windows 7-powered touch screen tablet PC, has an 8.9 inch LED-backlit display and a 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution, weighs 1.5 pounds and has two cameras, a VGA webcam for video conferencing and a 3MP camera.

The screen size of the iPad is 9.7 inches. The Slate 500 also comes with 64 gigabytes of storage, five hours of battery life and a digital stylus pen. It has an Intel Atom Z540 Processor, which is typically found on lower-end notebook computers; 2 GB of memory; Bluetooth; and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, although it does not have a built-in feature to connect to high-speed wireless networks.

Accessories including a keyboard, mouse and printer can be connected with the built-in USB 2.9 port. Photos and other files can be imported with an SD card.

The tablet will be based on webOS software from Palm, which HP purchased earlier this year. It also comes with Evernote software for writing emails and taking notes, as well as pre-installed HP Support Assistant, for help with maintenance and trouble-shooting, Adobe Reader and Adobe PDF.

The 16GB in the iPad is storage; internally it runs iOS on just 256MB of ram

I don't get Windows 7 as an interface with an iPad-like device. The beauty of the iPad is the extremely simple application/icon/touch interface. Windows 7, by nature, doesn't lend itself well to that sort of control.

I hope it's not a POS, apple really needs some competition to keep improving their stuff.

I would think that's the biggest concern of a Windows based tablet, that the OS code and standard application software is designed for fairly high precision tracking with smaller menu bars, drop down boxes, and the like, while iOS from Apple was touch based from the start.

The press release indicates that the HP Slate has 64GB of storage, like the high end iPad.

BTW, the Apple iPad has the same memory and graphics processor as the iPhone 3GS.

None of the past windows tablets have worked for that reason, maybe this OS won't suck?

Windows 7 is definitely better than XP on tablets since it can be pretty personalized with themes and such, but still has the basic windows functionality (mouse controlled by pointer and/or finger). My drawing tablet just controls the mouse, no special windows tablet thingers. However, I do think that Win7 can be well adapted to tablet use through extreme custom themes, but still nowhere near the iPad/iPhone OS.

While this HP would seem to have better value due to the specifications, in the end, it is just a last minute cobble together of random parts from HP's parts bin with a slightly altered version of the failed Palm, half-baked OS ironed on.

I think this product will fail miserably.

Have you seen Amazon's latest attack on the iPad? Screen glare? Really? That's it?... Pathetic.

Wow, what the hell made me so angry with HP?
Oh that's right, I made the mistake of buying an HP laptop that would shut itself down after 3 months due to overheating... Warranty would not cover that... "Not hardware or software related," Yeah.... right.... Like I purposely put duct tape over the cooling vents...

Also, try owning an HP phone with Windows Mobile 6.1 for 1 week, and if you are not bald from ripping your own hair out, I congratulate you.

Irony: I don't own a single Apple product... yet.

Maybe one day, I will own a base model Honda Civic and a Macbook... but I am not ready to make things boring nor am I going to make the more intelligent choice.

I AM CRAZY!

Uh oh . . . HP's site is touting this as a worker bee device . . .

"The HP Slate 500 is the ideal PC for professionals who don't usually work at a traditional desk, yet need to stay productive in a secure, familiar Windows environment. The HP Slate 500 is also intended for those who use custom applications built for Windows."

HP Lost Out on MBUSA's Business Plan

The company began testing of the iPad in 40 select dealerships this past June and ran the pilot through the summer. The company collected feedback from dealers and based on the results, decided to expand the program to all US showroom floors by the end of this year. ”The dealer feedback was so positive, it became a clear decision to make this business tool available nationwide,” said Andreas Hinrichs, Vice President of Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Financial.

Hyundai is also including the Apple device with it's Equus model, in lieu of an owner's manual

256MB ram not 2048mb of ram. And as with most Apple retardation, it is not replaceable/upgradeable.

The HP Slate does have 2GB of ram, necessary to run MS Windows.
