Just saying hi

Hello all, new to this forum but an internet vet!

After wanting a Mercedes for at least a decade, and collecting many magazines along the way, I finally bought my first this past week. It's most certainly a bit of a project machine, but that's what I was looking for - something I can tinker on while my wife is planning school lessons!

1989 300E with 321,5xxkms (about 300kms short of exactly 200,000 miles). Bought locally for $600 and driven home. The body has spots of rust here and there but the more important bits appear solid - which is uncommon for any 20+ year old cars here in New Brunswick.

As I mentioned, the car is driveable - but not well. The previous owner used it daily for 5 years, and I think he more or less just drove it until enough things broke! Idle is rough and the car mega-bogs (almost no response) at low RPMs, pulling away from a stop.

I've been into cars my whole life but more so from an armchair perspective. Took an engines class in high school but otherwise have very little mechanical experience. Have wanted to gain some for a long time though, so I'm looking forward to "digging in" and I'm happy to listen to any suggestions offered here! Already been doing loads and loads of reading here and elsewhere.

Anyways, the car...

Heep,
Welcome to the forum. There are a bunch of very knowledgeable guys here; the tech help section will be the place to post specific questions.
Great looking car!
Your assumption of the reason for the car's condition is probably right on. Many times what kills these cars is deferred maintenance. It can be costly just to get caught up--even if you do all the work yourself,-- as you apparently plan to do.
IMO, RUST is always the principle enemy. Do whatever you need to do to get the under-body rust controlled, then attend to the driveability and maintenance issues.

It's a RR crossing sign - either that or it's a dismanted TV antenna...

LOL, yeah, massive dragonfly. My wife collected and catalogued dragonflies one summer when she worked at the museum. Got the big one as a Christmas gift from her former neighbours!

Thanks for the welcome - I expect I'll be here quite a bit as I try to systematically work through all the issues, big and small!
