Let's not confuse debt with deficit.

Debt is the total owed. Deficits are annual shortfalls, which add to the national debt. The current debt is something on the order of 13.5 Trillion.+/-.
This year's deficit is something on the order of 1.3 trillion dollars.

We are to have balanced budget, yet they won't tell us how they are going to get one. We are going to continue to give the super rich "tax cuts", aka ripped off cash financed by borrowing, and yet, according to them, not have a deficit. What I see is two years of bickering, with a looming financial disaster coming when Rand Paul, who is a political fanatic whose ideology closely resembles anarchy, decides to filibuster raising the debt ceiling, resulting in an historic default on government bonds, causing a depression the likes of which we can little imagine. Add in the Birther Nuts, and you have a potent stew of nut case extremism mixed with economic hocus pocus. As usual, the American voters, careening like drunks in a bar, have no one to blame but themselves.

How much was the surplus when Bush took office?
