Any plumbers? Kitchen sink basket.
I need to remove the old one and install the new one.
You see in the pics the bottom of it has broken away taking with it the cross piece used to hold it in place, while a spud wrench is used on the spud nut. I'm turning the whole thing and have to figure out a way of holding the basket while using significant torque to remove the nut. The fella at the hardware store mentions to place a screw driver blade between the threads and nut and hammer away, the spud nut will break apart, if it's cast. I don't know what it's made of and don't want to damage the threads trying to break the nut. Any thoughts?

Drill two holes in the bottom of the basket in the rim outside the part that is rusted away. Insert two long phillips head screwdrivers in those holes and put another piece of metal between them so you can stop the basket from turning. Have someone hold the basket from above while you operate the wrench below.

Personally, I'd grab the basket from the bottom thru the hole with a big vice grips. have helper hold vise grips and put drift punch against one of the ears on the nut and whack with hammer to make spin off. That or take my dremal tool with small cutting wheel and just cut thru the nut.

BobK, I first used a large screw driver to bang on the tabs of the nut, to no avail. The spud wrench has a square hole for a 3/8 drive ratchet. I used that with the extension second, this is when I got both items to spin together. I may have to resort to a dremel afterall, another good idea, thanks guys.

Dremel will probably have it out in less than a minute. Just don't cut the sink! You can cut the heck out of the basket though and who cares? Once you have cut through the but one one side, just jam a big screwdriver in the slot, twist to expand the nut then yank it outta there. For some reason, I hate working under sinks. Probably reminds me too much of working under the dashboard.
