TV programs from Netflix

I cancelled cable and I am wondering, if I got Netflix, how current are the TV shows? Mostly I am interested in Discovery shows like Mythbusters, Deadliest Catch, and of course, Lisa from Ice Road Truckers. So I am wondering if I would get the current episodes, or do I have to wait a whole year or what. Is it just whatever is out on DVD?

You know, I've never thought about TV shows on Netflix. I ditched satellite and cable a couple years ago for off-air TV and never looked back.

My current setup is:

Antenna - > TiVo box with E-net - > TV

The TiVo box will stream Netflix, YouTube, Pandora radio and other online services.

Pretty current, but you can stream a lot of those shows on Discovery's website.

Right now Netflix has IRT up to season 3 streaming. When season 4 is over on TV they will probably get it.

The best part of Netflix is the really old TV shows. I tend to watch it in hotels when traveling; lately I was watching Kojak episodes. I've never gone looking for the new TV stuff (because it all sucks).

Some of the old "drama" is hilarious, the original Dragnet and Adam 12 shows will make you fall down laughing. Jack Webb is great, he never says more than two words together; then near the end of the show he launches into some extended monologue with a "moral" message about the evils of mary-jane or some other nonsense. I can not believe that we all watched those shows and took them seriously. Can you imagine what people will think of todays TV crap in 50 years?

IMHO Netflix is the best thing I have signed up for, I don't even have regular TV anymore.

For $10/month it's a great deal, especially with unlimited streaming.

I just wish they would stream more stuff; they are getting better but not everything can be streamed.

I'm sure it will keep increasing, it's probably a limitation of their servers. It even streams pretty well over 3G if I have a decent connection speed.

Eventually they probably will offer everything streaming. Its a good business model, they killed traditional brick and mortar DVD rental stores with it.

Mythbusters is a couple seasons back, as well as Bones, CSI etc.
They took Farscape off the list when I was about halfway through season 3, that's just wrong. There's also no way to contact them to say what you want them to have on instant.
You can watch most current network TV shows on Hulu. They are free but have commercials. As has been said, the premium network channels usually offer streaming episodes as well. As they say on Mythbusters, you need to go to the website to get everything they filmed anyways.

I've ditched TV for Netflix and Hulu as well!

The reason there is an odd assortment of shows and movies available for streaming has to do with the legal loops that Netflix has to clear prior to uploading it. Netflix could easily push their entire DVD collection onto the internet, but like i said they have to clear it with right's holders first.

The solution to watching current programming is to get a laptop and hook it up to your TV. Hulu, Fox, and CBS have most of their current programming online. Comedy Central and Southpark have their own special sites too.

Then of course you have surfthechannel, alluc.org ,etc . It's pretty easy to watch TV without a TV and and with no commercials!
