Home computer network problem...

I'm a bit stumped on this one, I'm trying to set up a network at my house for my sisters computer.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833130056

I have this router.

Here is the problem, my new computer is plugged into it and works fine. Her computer which is my old one will not connect to it, neither will her laptop. Firefox just says their is no internet connection. To troubleshoot I plugged her ethernet cable directly into the modem and no good, still does the same thing. Which is strange since that computer was hooked up and working perfectly fine until I moved it. Than I thought I had a bad cable so I borrowed another one and the same problem.

I'm stumped, could it be I got 2 bad cables?

DHCP

You need to turn it on on each device connecting to the router.

Right click on the network connection ( or Control Panel -> Network)

Dang not at an XP machine.

Once in the network connection, click properties, tcp/IP and in there there should be a setting to use DHCP, there will be 2 check boxes make them both the same.

Let me know if you have problems, I'll fire up an XP box and get the exact way in.

If there's anti-virus software, you may have to "allow" it to join the new network.

even with dhcp turned on, the browser could be having issues due to a hacked program or some spyware. open firefox and go to tools and then hit advanced, and then network settings and verify no proxy is set. then go the internet options and verify the same. if any of that specifies a proxy, get a copy of rkill and malware bytes and get rid of the infections.

Are your cables of the correct polarity? Connecting 2 computers might require a polarity reversed from connecting a computer to a peripheral.

Sad to say here, but that device you linked to is in fact a switch, not a router, it is not used to connect multiple pc's to a broadband connection. And in most cases your ISP will only allot a single DHCP IP address from their system/modem, so if you have 2+ pc's connected to the modem with a switch, either just one will get online, or both won't. Plug a proper router into your modem, then both pc's into the lan ports on the router, and you'll likely be working again....

Moral of the story: obtain proper device for what you are trying to do

You are right, this switch does not do DHCP or NAT. It is just a cable extender for a LAN. Go to Best Buy and get a router...

Here is a test, take the old computers and plug them into the modem and see if they work directly connected to it...

I tried that already, it did not work. Which is the most perplexing part of this.

Bump, ok plugged my sisters ethernet cable directly into my computer, so now I'm 100% sure the cable is fine. I'm using it right now and the connection is fine. I went to Optimums website since they are the service provider and it said if I hooked up a router I could run two computers, so I don't think the service provider is the problem here?

So is what I have not the right thing? Do I need to buy a router?

Yes, that'll work. But you dont need to go that expensive if your just putting 'net through..

Something like this will work:

I don't want wireless though, also the last time I tried hooking up a wireless router my connection speed was cut in half!

You must have had a leech or something on your wireless....

In that case, here is a wired only version:
