Our Pet Deer

About ten years ago, I sold my cattle and rented my pastures and meadow to my neighbor. I have only about 6 or 7 acres that he doesn't use and is in a few lots near the house.

About 3 or 4 years ago, there was a yearling deer that kept hanging around behind the house and my wife found a place in a field next to the house where she thought he was bedding down. She made me stop shredding much of that field so he would have some cover.

For the last few years we have seen the deer off and on and we're pretty sure it's the same one. I saw it in the Spring and it was pretty good size.

My neighbor was running the fences a few weeks ago and said that he saw a huge buck and described where he saw it and said it had a really big rack. This is where my wife and I have seen signs of where it has bedded down. The bad thing was that it ran across the road from us. Luckily that is a place that is not hunted either.

My wife called me early this morning to tell me that she saw him. I have tried to catch him with a camera with no luck. I will keep trying hoping I can get a picture for everyone.

He seems to be in a relatively safe situation, but as he gets bigger I'm afraid that he might venture into the wrong place somewhere and get harvested. He will range out pretty far to find his girl friends and that might be where he could get harvested.

I used to Deer hunt and one of the reasons for moving here 24 years ago was to have a place to hunt without driving long distances from the city. Once I got here and harvested a few I gave it up. It was just different when I was taking them off my own place. So far the urge to go get him has not arisen in my mind.

Yes, we've learned to plant a big enough garden so that there's enough for us AND the deer. We have plenty of them around, but this one's special because it has hung around here all it's life and has managed to reach trophy size.

Wouldn't it make sense to harvest him simply because there is such an overpopulation of them?
