fun ways to dust off a thursday

received a call yesterday in the early a.m. that this tall tree on the left, fell on to my neighbor's deck...and i thought coffee was a pick-me-uphttp://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg91/ghogweed/i9.jpg

sooo....went there today to clean up the debris and this is what it looked like

after about 20 minutes with a chainsaw (more like 4 hours) it looked a little better

ran out of daylight and the saw started acting up and now it looks like this....neighbor is happy, no one was hurt either by the tree falling or me with a chainsaw...bought his wife a new garden bench and she was pleased...just have to go back and finish it up this weekend

Dang! What a way to spend the day. Bet you're glad it's behind you.

That sticky sap destroyed a pair of gloves too, fooling with it I'll bet too.

That L A R G E part of the trunk on the ground can't be fun to deal with getting rid of though!

I noticed the church right across the street from your home, Hogweed. Is that your church, and do they ring the bells at regular times? Just wondering......

The density of the neighborhood around the church suggests an older neighborhood. I travelled PA, NJ, MD, a loong time ago - lived in Jenkintown in Philly for a couple months.

I had two like that, Maples, come down in June while we were on vacation.
Well major damage.
Took an afternoon with the wife to clear one, another afternoon on my own to clear the other, then a third Sunday morning with my brother to remove the damage still in the tree's themselves. Hard work, but at least I have firewood.

Then Monday the neighbor had some major tree trimming done, more maples. I asked the guys if I could have the wood.
Well they piled it up in long sections, I had to cut it up and move it over to my yard where I keep it and of course stack it.
I figure I've got about 10 face, maybe 12, cords of firewod now. 3 ish still needs to age and then be split.
Whats in the pics isn't everything and it is very tightly stacked, unlike when the guys deliver it.

You can see in the pic the small triangle of darker wood, thats from our trimming a few weeks ago. All the lighter stuff is from the neighbors that I cut and moved Monday AM. 2 layers deep.

You should cut yourself a few blocks of trunk to use as supports for when you need to get under your car. They are far safer than jack stands.
some one is going to score a good load of fire wood for use in a year or so.

thats exactly what i do with those bigger sections! i have a couple already from ice damage a few years back. as far a fire wood goes, it is pine and not that good to burn indoors, or so i was told

pine is sappy, pops and snaps real loud and will foul your chimney pretty fast with creosote..is that a White Pine? Maybe they're a little harder than the Ponderosas we have out west.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with pine for an outdoor fire, but you better be vigilant about chimney cleanings if you burn it indoors.

X2, MAYBE if you let it dry a least 2 years (Maybe).
Otherwise, firepit.
