W123 OEM roof rack?

Once a few months ago I saw a 240D like mine with an old fashioned chrome roof rack that looked like it was made for the car. It was going the other direction on the highway and I only got a glance. It reminded me of the chrome racks you see on old beetles that have been restored to spec. Does anyone know if such a thing existed or exists?

Dunno the answer but I will piggyback another question.

What is the safe load limit of a w123 TD roof rack?

You haven't given much of a description but, if it was sort of a basket type with twin bars about 4 inches apart going around the perimeter, I have seen that type and while I don't know if it was a factory option, it was available through the dealership.

If you go to the EPC and look at any 123 vehicle, then go to section 84 Trunks and Cases, there are a couple sub groups under that, the first one being Roof Rack shows the basket type I've seen. If you look around at the other sub groups under that section there was a whole array of specific carriers, for skis, bicycles, surf boards, for a boat, and there where a couple of different boxes, one long and one set of two that filled the rack for the TDs.

At the risk of sounding like a complete dummy, what's "the EPC" and how do I go there?
Thanks for the reply!

I was wondering that same thing...

Also, I would be surprised if there was an OEM rack offered, I believe I've seen some other threads on this subject and the collective opinion was that they didn't make them. However, a lot of rain gutter type racks would probably fit (or could be modified to fit) a w123...just have to find a cool vintage one. And, a nice vintage rack would likely be cheaper than a modern yakima or thule system.

EPC = Mercedes Benz Electronic Parts Catalog

You need to subscribe and in the course of subscribing you need to provide a credit card number, you will not be charged if you only subscribe to the US version, the world wide version is available for $12 for which you would be charged.

Once you've subscribed you can search by model numbers, you can search by your vehicle's VIN, and you can search by part numbers and cross reference to other vehicles, you can input your VIN and get your vehicle's Data Card info.

This service is not accessible to Mac users, and Obamunistas/Democrats/liberals/leftists!

EPC, see previous response!

Suprise! They did make and offer them! MB # 123 840 15 24 is the part number for a pair of gutter mount cross supports for the 123 chassis.

Well "collective opinion was that they didn't make them", you know what they say about opinions! I suppose we can extrapolate therefore "collective opinions" are like collective a$$h*!es!

Ahh, well there you go, I'm surprised. I don't recall ever seeing one before, that's pretty cool. And, you're right, I should probably know better than to rely on others opinions...usually I'm better about such things and skeptical of everybody!

It's working fine on this Macintosh. I just spoof a Win-Doze browser and it can't tell the difference. Thanks for the clarification.

I just bought one. An "original" roof rack for a 1983 300d still in the box never opened. I have no idea what it looks like yet but, I can post picks in a couple weeks if anyone is interested.
