A lexus just won't replace a Mercedes...

A friend of mine, had a '83 300sd for years. He loved the thing to death. He finally decided it was not worth keeping on the road and got rid of it for a 1993 Lexus GS300. He said while the Lexus is a nice car, it's just not a real car like the Benz. He said it has too much electronic junk and is just not as solid. I have never owned a Lexus, and also I guess a LS would have been the equivilent model. I do feel the same way that the Lexus is over filled with electronic junk while the Benz is just a good solid car. Any other thoughts?

If he's not happy with an '83 300SD, and a '93 Lexus GS300 doesn't please him - he ought to go out and buy a new one of each brand. How is a car nearly 20 years old so great in 2011??

I'm on my second LS as my daily highway commuter. My first was a 2000 model, and how I have a 2004 model. Love the car; Toyotas aren't the most exciting cars in the world, but a large, fast, RWD sedan that never breaks is perfect for my 140 miles a day drive. Most think I'm crazy, but in the 80's the SEL was popular because it was a large, fast, RWD sedan that never broke.

My BIL is as big Lexus fan as I am to MB. He has kept a couple of his old rides and they are in wonderful condition. I have made piece with his joy but he loves to sucker punch me every now and then about MB until I jabbed him back one day in front of family. I asked him "Jim is it Toyota you like or just the fact Lexus looks like a Benz?" He has kept his comments to himself for sometime now. Oddly enough the other BIL is a Caddy guy - He doesn't spar with either of us.

I still drive my large, fast RWD '80's SEL everyday for my 80 miles round trip commute. 288k and counting. I like my embassy car (as the wife calls it-just need the little flags)
and now that Lexus is being copied by Hundai.

From the back some people mistake my 02 clk 320 for a lexus. I have to restrain myself from chocking the living $hit out of those uninformed people.

It is said there is the good, the bad and the ugly. An 83 SD is a solid car, but let's not forget it is OLD. Which means there are components which will need to be replaced along the way. For people who don't have a problem with that, it's ok. OTH, the Lexus is newer which means the parts are newer which should mean less headaches. Lexus is a nice car, but like the culture that built it, it tends to be on the sterile/non feeling side of things. An older benz, OTH, has personality and the famous feel of a solid German road car. Plus, the famous hidden safety features. An older benz is not for everybody but for those who have the patience to deal with upkeep and maintenance, it gives back a LOT.

I can't afford and don't have the time for car obsessions, well, not counting my lust for old International Harvester Travelalls. I love my Mercedes and plan to keep it a long while, but if a nice mid 90's LS400 came along at a good price I'd grab it, and take my chances with all the unnecessary bells and whistles. The GS300 or whatever it's called is just a Camry in disguise if I'm not mistaken. FWD, totally different car. I've read a number of reviews calling the LS400 one of the most bombproof cars ever built, as long as you stay away from the weird pneumatic suspension option.

Nowadays, Mercedes is copying Hyundai, and Honda for sure. Maybe Kia is next?

I felt the same way when a doofus down the block told me 20 years ago coming out of church, he liked the BMW I recently bought. (It was my 1st MB.)

Nope, the GS is a RWD based (I think?) on the Toyota Soarer chassis, which is actually quite good. A lot of folks drive modded GS300s as DDs since it shares its engine with the Supra. Lexuses are good cars...just boring IMO, maybe with the exception of the Older IS models
