Previous discussion!
A few weeks ago there was a discussion here that involved whether there had been religious discrimination and persecution, nee even murder, by the early settlers to America. Not only did it happen then but seems to have continued in to this century.
This is a very good and relatively short history of those times and events. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Americas-True-History-of-Religious-Tolerance.html?c=y&page=1 |

Good essay. I'm a little puzzled by his description of anti-Catholicism as a kind of religious intolerance. Seems like that kind of claim needs to be put in a broader historical context. The development and expansion of democracy in Europe, particularly in Great Britain, occurred with Protestants opposed the combination of king and Pope (or bishop) found in the aristocratic monarchies of Europe. It's not unreasonable in my mind to see the separation of Church and State in the USA as a kind of logical terminus of the opposition of Protestants to Catholics in Europe. In other words, the political structure of the USA with it's democracy is inherently in tension with hierarchical religious views. While this opposition does not necesarily imply any emotional animosity towards Catholics, the political system itself is not consistent with traditional Catholicism. In other words, the banning of Catholics from holding public office in some US states is not really 'religious intolerance' but 'political intolerance'.

A Female as Presidant by 2018. Then a Muslim for president by 2026.
Then America can show the world their accomplishments. Nice~
