I have lost my mind....

Yeah, I know, I am crazy.

I am looking at BMW M3s... For the price, the handling/performance is very hard to beat.

Plus, they have a ton of aftermarket parts for them, and are fairly inexpensive.

No, you haven't.

BMW's are very attractive from all points of perspective...........except the maintenance.

Is it just me, or do you not see very many (any!) BMW's on the road more than 10-15 years old. Most I see are in the sub-5 to 7 year category. That might be a view into their reliability.

I agree, although the 740 can really lighten your wallet in a big way.

The M3 is pretty popular here but I understand it is difficult to find a good second hand one. I think anything that can fly like an M3 is more likely to be abused than a less exciting car - check really carefully for accident damage. Don't disregard small bangs and scrapes even if they are on replaceable bits - it has been said before but I'll say it again - maintenance costs can be crazy particularly for an M3. They are expensive cars to buy new.

As a rough rule of thumb you could compare your known maintenance costs for your existing car per year and compare that with the purchase price of the car when it was new. Use the same ratio to give you an idea of what you may expect for an M3 and then just hope nothing big goes!

Thats because around here they rust into BMW dust in about 6-7 years.

Which M3? E30, E36, E46, new?

I don't think BMW maint costs are much different than Mercedes- not in my experience anyhow.

Like the song goes,

"No matter how hard,
I sweat and toil,
I still can't afford,
a 740il"

(Oh nevermind it's the 750. But you get the point.)

I got I ride home yeterday in a big '01 740, it's the shuttle car at a Mercedes/BMW/Audi/Porsche/place I sometimes use, and wow, what a beautiful comfortable fast sweet god handling big cruiser it was. NICE !!!
