My 115 300D is 36 this year and still runs great. It needs a bit of interior TLC but it runs great.

They ease up on the smog test criteria at age 20 and by 24 its gone. Also depends on which county you live in, some do not have emissions testing at all.

Never understood that concept. Vehicle emissions should be clan regardless of age or area.

I asked them to put the sniffer in and run it (they did not charge me since I was not a 'state inspection' requirement and she still passed. I think it's a good way to tell if something is wrong and should she not pass one day, I will get it fixed. Damned if I will be one of those old clunkers driving down the road stinking up the air.

As a Texan, the cut-off is supposed to be 24 years old; my 1986 CJ7 just became exempt this year and my 1985 500SE became exempt last year. Your car should still have to pass emissions for another year - unless they changed the laws this year.

And, David, the exemption exists exactly for the classic car hobbyists; the percentage of cars over 24 yrs is so small, that even if they ran dirty the damage they do is negligible. You should applaud that law; as car guys, we all should.
