Garage door opener issue

So my garage door opener has failed and I'm having it replaced tomorrow. Unfortunately the insurrance (American Home Shield) is telling me that they will only supply one remote control as that's all the openers come with. This seems like bs to me. Anybody know wether that's so or not. It's a two car garage, and both my original openers for the two bay and the single bay come with two remotes each. Doesnt' seem logical that an opener would be sold with only one remote.

- Peter.

I don't understand why would your insurance company buy you a garage door opener? lightning strike? Your wife drive like marge simpson? (sorry couldn't resist.

They usually have two - just tell them there was only one and send them the reciept. What are they going to do make you send one to them?

Because it's covered under the home warranty. And it's a piece of junk which has been acting up recently and now will not open or close the door. I have to do that by hand. So it's being replaced but they are probably trying to cheap out and make me pay an extra 40 bucks to buy anohter remote. Not very happy with them at this point.

Cheaper units come with just one. You can always buy/program extra ones though.

Why is your insurance company buying a garage opener for you? You can pick up a real nice one just about anywhere for less than $200

So it's a homeowner's warrantee issue, not insurance?

If it's a name-brand opener, you should be able to buy extra remotes at home depot, etc. I have bought several replacement remotes for my Genie opener, they are fairly cheap.

Sorry yes, I guess it's not insurance exactly. It's the warrantee thing. I have craftsman units that are 10 years old or therabouts, they were installed when the house was built. They are pretty crappy. The plastic covers and screw mounting points literally disintegrated in the techs hands when he was trying to change out components like the circuit board etc. I'm fine with the entire contraption being replaced, just think the idea of a garage opener with only one remote is bogus. What the hell use is that in a family home with two people and two cars?

if the old one theyare replacing had two remotes, they should be replacing with a new one with two remotes. If your four ton A/C unit died, would they be allowed to replace it with a two ton?

I agree, but they are probably too cheap to argue about.

BTW, some cars have built in openers that can be "paired" with your door.

They include one remote with the cheap opener because they figure if you need an extra, you'll buy it separate, or just buy the opener that includes more.

Millions of people have a single stall garage, so having two remotes is fairly pointless in that situation, since only one car can park inside anyways.

Not everyone has two+ stall garages with dual escalades parked in it.

What brand? I have a couple of Genie ones and Chamberlain ones lying around somewhere. I don't use them anymore. I have an external one with a keycode access. For my cars, even the Vette has been retrofitted with a mirror that has Homelink.

Escalades. Never will happen. Though one day I hope to have a Suburban and a Mercedes or two in there. Right now my wife and I are way downmarket from any of those.

Isn't that coverage like $400/year?
