What does everyone think of these bruisers?

Here is the local ad for a Disco:
http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/2147421871.html

Other than the color I really like the look of the Land Rovers - I've always been a fan, even the old Series ones...

Now, how about the reliability and cost of keeping these toys on the road. Can you work on them yourself of do you need to see your local dealer for every little thing?!

Compare that to a very similar Jeep Cherokee also available locally at nearly the same mileage and pretty close price:

Opinions welcome -

From what i've heard from owners and read online if you can handle a wrench then you can fix most things. There are some computer diagnostic situations but not too many especially on the Series 1s (of which I like the 98 LSEs the most.)

Here is a good place to find information.

Even Clarkson says it! Obviously you know which one will give you less problems.

Funny, I have a much nicer and lower mileage '98 Cherokee I'm reconditioning for sale right now and plan on pricing it almost a grand less than the one you're listing. PM sent. The XJ the best value Jeep chassis right now as far as I'm concerned.

I had a 92 Cherokee for about 10 years and 100k miles (winter beater/ski car). I can't say I liked it or enjoyed driving it, but it was dirt cheap to operate and it was reliable (even though I neglected it). The 4.0 engine is pretty sturdy, but the rest of it was pretty cheap/flimsy. I'm not a fan of the brakes or handling, it's basically a truck, but it does go through the snow pretty well with decent M&S tires.

That's probably the most practical of the Land Rover brand and it still ate $5600 in 18 months. Amazing. I'm assuming the lift kit means the air suspension is gone.

Always liked the 95 LWB classics...not too sure about that 4.2 liter engine though. Again research is paramount.

Also Yes, Old Man Emu on the advertised 95 is coil spring suspension (Really not worth dealing with the original air setup)

I wouldn't drive a used Land Rover if one were given to me - is how negatively I feel about their reliability/costs to operate. Too risky....

No way I'd buy a Jeep that old. Way too many problems with 'em that old.

Just my assessment of those two....

Some of these Discos had serious engine problems. They used an engine build method like the old Chevy Vega did where the amount of precision in lining up the cylinders was critical and in many cases was not done as it should have been.

There is a great deal of info about this on line. Most owners refer to it as head gasket failure but it seems to be much worse than than.

I understand Land Rover repaired a lot of these, so check for paperwork to see if this engine has been fixed or if this is one of the engines in question.

The other aspect is parts. I do see more than a few late style (97+) Cherokees at PNP. I am currently poping out the sheet metal on one to get it back on the road. In 97 the body and the interior was changed. It is quite an improvement from the earlier interior. I'd also question about fuel milage. Cherokees vary from 18 mpg to 22 mph on the highway. I don't know what the Land Rovers get.
