One thing Good about an air cooled engine.

You never run out of air.

Loved the truthful Doyle / Dane / Bernbach nyc ad agency (DDB) VW beetle ads from the 1960's.

Who remembers them?

I agree about the air part. Not so much the cooled part.

There have been so many issues and limitations with the air cooled part, especially for oil, that the VW people having Beetles and 181 cars opted for oil sump extensipons, and oil temp gauges and sensors.

If you drive no faster than 40, it's autumn or winter and you don't use and heat, you're probably ok

Corvairs were my air cooled vehicle of choice. The most interesting parts were the leaky pushrod tubes directly above the heater boxes. I'll go to my grave with the Pavlovian response of expecting burning oil smells each November as the temperature drops.
A damn fine vehicle in the snow until the drifts got deep enough to lift up the front end due to the large flat expanse at the bottom of the 'trunk'. The rear wheels would still have traction but controlling it was roughly equivalent to turning a toboggan.

Somewhere I have a pic of a pair of Beetles in front of a radiator repair shop-
I generally prefer Deutz diesels over the VW engines, though, they're a bit more durable and reliable.

I had a '73 bus. Loved the huge sunroof and the seats that can be reconfigured into a "lounge". Hated winter driving where the heat vents were more like hope vents.

The VW beetle's heater is about as effective as a mouse breathing on your leg.

I bought a VW and it ran great until the cooling fan somehow sucked up a piece of cardboard and burned up the engine.

Back in my childhood in Nebraska, we owned a beetle that had been fitted with a gasoline-fired heater.

An excellent accessory, as the front-mounted gas tank may not otherwise have a source of ignition in the event of an impromptu get-together with a Coupe deVille..
