CE light?

Does he happen to have the owners manual? It will say what it means inside.

It is probably the CEL. He can take it to the local Autozone and they will put a code reader on it for free...

that light is the bane of poor old ladies everywhere. gas attendant leaves the gas cap loose and the dealer tells her she needs a new engine.

Best get to autozone quick. Last week at Advance, the guy on duty went out to read and clear a code on someone's car. He mentioned in way of passing that in a couple months that they would be "prohibited" from doing that.

The way he said "prohibited" had "by law" written all over it. Anyone know of such pending legislation, either national or NC state? Or could it be that Advance has just decided they don't want to be bothered with it any more?

I invested $40 and bought a OBDII scanner a few years back. It is great! I even took it to the car lot when I was shopping to quickly plug it in and check any potential purchases for codes

about 90% of the time the CEL really means emissions problems. Seriously, have him check to see if the gas cap is tight. Sounds stupid, but if its loose the pressure in the tank is not regulated properly, thus there is a fuel problem, and the CEL comes on. really uber deadly gas vapors are coming out (at lest thats how they make is sound her in CA ) thus its an emission problem.

With a car that new its likely something stupid like the gas cap.... then again is an Avio

CEL in modern cars is geared for emissions. Be careful when using generic code readers since you could end up replacing parts that are fine within the affected subsystem. For instance, Mercedes software reads the extra code informatio that genetics can't and can also live test components while still in the car so it's ablot faster and cheaper than a potential "trial by error" replacement of parts.

My step dad has an Aveo and the last time the cel came on the cat was somehow clogged, glowed red, and melted the front bumper. I'd check it asap.

Probably his gas cap is loose. That is by far the most common reason the CEL illuminates.

My uncle has been driving a 1996 cavalier since new (140k on it now) and its only had the light go on twice, once for oxygen sensor, and once for loose gas cap. Thats it. Its a terrible car, but it has been extremely reliable. Disclaimer is that he drives it like a granny, so it hardly ever does much work. I'm sure it'd have been lucky to last me 75k.
