Cuba

Cuba policy to be modified

Did I miss the part where the US policy regarding Cuba was successful in some way? As I understand it we are the only country that does not have relations with Cuba. US citizens go there all the time. They just have to lie about it. I think that if after 50 some odd years if the policy does not work it is time to change the policy. What's the big freaking deal.

It never made any sense, it was a purely domestic political issue due to the large number of cuban-americans in florida. That generation of cuban refugees is nearly gone, so there is no political reason to continue this silliness. I wouldn't mind seeing cuba, seems like an interesting place but going there would have been a hassle.

The nationalization by Cuba of all american business assets really pissed off the american government at the time. Also they were a communist state basically at a time when comunists influences where feared.

It is irrational basically to contine the attempt at exclusion currently. The Cuban government has stated their system does not work well enough to self sustain.

My Canadian friend goes to Cuba every year. They have some great resorts there and they are cheap. As an American, you can go to Cuba, you just have to leave from Mexico or another country. Just make sure that the Cuban customs people don't stamp your passport. And bring me back some cigars.

I look forward to the day they have a Major League baseball team in Havana. I'm not sure where they would put it. The American League West has the fewest teams at the moment, but Cuba needs to be in the Eastern Division of either the AL or the NL.

It is time to welcome Cuba back into the family of nations. They are less threat than China or any number of other nations we have normal relations with.

American's go their all the time they just have to be sneaky about it.

The only reason this policy is continuing is because of the Cuban Americans. They still have an axe to grind it seems. Regular Americans don't care.

The best way to peacefully and openly undermine any dictatorship is to increase the economic power of the middle class.

Thumbs up

It never made any sense to continue the policy. After a while it was just BS macho posturing by "certain" presidents.

Interesting that there are no negative reactions in this thread.

These "changes" are slightly misleading. I have been able to go to Cuba several times with a church group, with the understanding and support of the State department and the Cuban government providing I do not criticize the "State".
The stipulation of money not going to the government or the Communist party is a little naive as well. When that money hits those shores, likely it will be taxed to within an inch of the owners life, meaning the Castros will benefit from our largesse. We cannot dictate (no pun intended) how another country taxes its citizens.

So our export of jobs, undermining the middle class makes the US vunerable to a dictatorship? All this to empower the Chinese middle class? See how well that is working. OK, it might take time.
At this point Cuba is irrellavent, politically. I'd say open the borders. I think Mexico is a greater threat.
