Might get an iPad for the wife for Vday
I understand the MkII version is coming out in April which is too late for Vday. I was hoping for a better price. The best price for the bare bones version is $500.
I am looking at the specs for the various types of iPads and I can't figure out what they mean. She will be basically be using it for email and movies during vacations. I figure the bare bones version will do. Is that right? My philosophy has always been...Happy wife=Happy life.

I would think that would be sufficient given your/her expected use. We bought my 8yo one for his birthday because there are so many great special education apps for him. It was the lowest priced one at the time, I think it was 16GB with WiFi. There are so many WiFi hotspots now that is didnt make sense for us to spring for the 3G wireless option. Many apps and movies require WiFi to download and it's a lot faster anyway.
He's got over 100 songs and 6 movies on it along with all of the apps (yes there are some games on it, too) and there's still plenty of storage available. There is an Apple book reader app but since we already had a Kindle account, we have a few books on it as well.

They are nice little toys. I'm typing this on mine (64GB with 3G); they don't really replace a computer, but they are great for reading books, watching netfix, web surfing, e-mail, meetings, games, etc. You don't really need the 3G version unless you are traveling.
I'm sure there will be a new version this year, but there will always be another version. I doubt the price will go down much, they are already fairly cheap. Usually they keep prices the same and add features. |
