Pakistan's shame... what is to blame for this? Social norms in the culture dominated by? Poverty? Religion? Government?

Abortion is prohibited in Pakistan, except when the mother's life is at risk from her pregnancy, but advocates say that legalisation would reduce infanticide and save mothers from potentially fatal back-street terminations.

There is a big part of the answer. It is still a relatively poor nation. The article states that since girls are not allowed to work they are a financial burden on the family.

We still have some infants killed here even though we have many other options for desparate women. I suspect the number if known would surprise us.

Though I am not an advocate of using abortion I support the idea of it being available to desparate women, but not those gruesome late term ones!

As the article stated, its mostly female babies that are abondoned. This a concern, then that generation comes of age. Then there will be a lot of males, without wives. Not a good senerio. Its already a very unstable region. The same thing is happening in China and India. A lot more people though in those countires. Not good.

I have a good friend who was born in China. I remember twenty years ago discussing with him the prevelance of families killing off girl babies due to the birth freeze. His comment was there would be a lot of homosexuality in the future due to the shortage of women. I wonder if it has happened that way?
