Apple CEO To Take Medical Leave

Manufacturing.Net - January 17, 2011
.
.
.....NEW YORK (AP) -- Apple Inc. founder and CEO Steve Jobs sent a note Monday to employees saying he's taking a medical leave of absence so he can focus on his health.

.....He says he will continue as CEO and be involved in major decisions but has asked chief operating officer Tim Cook to be responsible for all day-to-day operations.

.....Jobs says he loves Apple and hopes to be back as soon as he can. He says he and his family would appreciate respect for their privacy.

.....Cook took the company reins when Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, went on medical leave from January through June 2009.

.....It was Cook's second stint leading Apple. Cook, who joined Apple in 1998, ran the Cupertino, Calif.-based company for two months in 2004 while Jobs recovered from surgery for pancreatic cancer. His performance then won him the promotion to chief operating officer in 2005.

.....Analysts credit Cook with solving problems that Apple was having with inventory management. Many people consider Cook as Jobs' logical successor.

.....Under Cook's direction in 2009, the company kept cranking out well-received products including updated laptops with lower entry-level prices and a faster iPhone with many longed-for features. Apple sold more than a million of the new iPhone 3GS during its first three days on the market.

I assume he will fully retire before too long, Tim Cook is more than capable of running their operations. The only question is whether he, or someone else in the organization, will be able to make high level "product design" decisions without out it degenerating into "design by committee."

I've been thinking he didn't look too healthy for quite some time. I hope that Apple can survive without him. It didn't do very well after they booted him out the last time.

It will be interesting to watch the stock, they are at about $348 right now and lots of folks have their target in the $425 range. So far today, they are up about 0.8%. I suspect that his last medical leave proved they could do OK without him to most investors.

I thought the markets were closed today due to MLK-Holiday.

Let's see what tomorrow shall bring...

I'm a shareholder and have been accused by jealous Win-Doze users more than once of being a fan-boy. I'm not in the least worried. Jobs has been ill for two years now. Anyone with even the most remote understanding of pancreatic cancer knows that those with it rarely live more than 5 years after diagnosis, no matter how rich they are. My stock, which I bought many years ago at 18 dollars, went up almost 3 bucks today after the news came out. Wall street knows by now that Apple has so many "next big things" in the pipeline that Jobs' ultimate departure is almost irrelevant. His absence is already built into the stock price.
I've said before, I've been listening to naysayers twitter and bleat about Apple going broke since 1984. Sure is taking a while.

His cancer was 100% treated. It was, apparently, the rare version that can be. His latest illness is probably again due to his vegan diet/liver damage.

The guy's sick. No question about it.

Let him be. Apple will survive with or without him (Jobs).

They sure did without Wozniak all this time.

Its now pretty much a face for marketing, the founder of 1984's Apple is CEO of the 2011 Apple.

Get over it.

If Woz takes over as CEO, I rest my case....
