50 years ago JFK inaugurated

Who else is old enough to remember that day?

A cold day in the District it was. It snowed the night before and schools were closed.
I remember asking my HS history teacher after the Nov. election if he thought Kennedy's religion hurt him in the election. He felt the opposite- that it helped him. Even back then there was consternation about Papal takeover, influence, etc., etc.
False fears.
Hmmmm.....

To young for that one, but I remember his assasination, when I was 9, like it was yesterday.

Guilty.
I remember election night watching TV waiting for Cook County to file their results.....

The only thing I really remember about inauguration day was how cold and crisp it was, weather-wise.
Would you believe I got into a fist fight on the school bus defending JFK, the day he was shot.

That was my freshman year in college. A hush fell over the campus. Tears, anguish, Campus chapel filled. Friday afternoon. School closed. Trudged home to NYC. We watched Jack Ruby kill LHO on live TV Sunday morning (my birthday of all days!). Almost as shocking as the assasination itself.

Mom kept us home from school as it unfolded. I still recall the shock I felt, even at 9 years of age, when Jack Ruby shot Oswald on live TV, and to this day I will never forget the look on Oswald's face as he uttered "Ouuu...".

I tend to remember that nearly everyone in the country owned Vaughn Meader's "The First Family" comedy LP.

Well ok. The speech was rather bellicose, given the occasion and the era, listening to it 50 years later.
Can't remember who was the Soviet Premier at the time. Kruschev I guess?

It was a great day! Cold and nasty in Milwaukee and cold and nasty in DC. People, (voters) crossed over much more in those days. You didn't vote for JFK, what the heck, we were still all Americans. After he got seated I think the Republicans loved him as much as the Democrats, much as with Eisenhower, I think the Democrats loved him, (mostly) and Truman, after people got to know him, was highly respected by both parties. That is the way we remember it, and Reta and I were still in our 20's. Not by much though! As I remember it, Republicans were not in love with FDR, but they did respect his great effort to secure the "win" in WWII.

To me, JFK's tenure as president was the last great administration in our history. He was getting us out of Vietnam, he handled the Cuban missile crisis well (not perfect, but well). Jackie dressed like a million bucks and brought grace and style to the White House. They are missed.
