Looking for an insurance company for our home and two cars.

We are looking for an insurance company for our home and two cars. We have tried to find out prices over the internet but have found the process extremely confusing. What insurance company would you suggest for 2 drivers aged 56 and 60, and two cars, a 5 year old Honda Civic and a 2 year old Toyota Prius? We both have spotless driving records and haven't ever made any insurance claims. Thanks in advance.

I just did an insurance round robin. USAA came in best.

USAA is great but they don't sell to everybody. They have restrictions based on military service. I have found that dealing with those big companies that do a lot of advertising on TV and promise to save you money has some pitfalls. They low-ball you on the first year premiums then raise them dramatically upon renewal, even without a claim or points on your record.

I had a great long term experience with auto and homeowner's insurance with Erie Insurance Group, but alas, they do not sell in my new home state.

State Farm

is the largest auto insurer in the U.S.A. They may not be the cheapest but they are reliable and offer great service. We have had auto and home insurance with them for 40 years or more. Have had a small number of claims over the years including a tree falling through our roof with no complaints from them or us and no premium increases.

Contact your local credit union. They usually have providers they recommend to members, many at a good discount. They will probably be local, which makes them easier to deal with. And lastly, you will be doing business with the community instead of a corporation located in who-knows-where.

Statefarm here, seems reasonable to me. stay away from the good hands people, as they were bad hands in Florida when a hurricane wiped out many allstate holders because allstate up and moved out of the state to keep from having to fork out billions back in the late 80's or early 90's

I use state farm as well, have all my stuff through them...then again we've used the same agent forever.

See if there is an American National agency in your state. I have never been able to beat their rates and their service is fantastic.

I once had a water leak in my house and they paid $8,000 for the repair because it was covered. A friend of mine wiped out one of my cars on an icy road and they paid above market for after it was declared totaled.

I was with Allstate until I was in a head-on wreck with another driver who had Allstate. I saw him coming and hit the brakes so I was at a standstill and about to reverse when he drove right into me. It was clearly his fault as he was on the wrong side of the street, but since he also had Allstate they told me to file on my insurance, pay my deduct and watch my rates go up. They said if two Allstate owners hit each other this was the way it worked.

So I told them good-bye and started looking around. That was about 25 years ago and so far I see no reason to go back.

Rates vary from state to state, sometimes county to county, since underwriting risks are different. While your driving and claims history may be good, is your credit rating also in good shape? Many carriers evaluate credit scores along with risk in setting rates.

Nearly all aspects of insurance deal with "risk tolerance" so examine deductibles; replacement cost coverage; personal umbrella policies; special coverages for valuables. Then also look for discounts like multi-policy, good driver, good student, rebates or deductible waivers, accident forgiveness, alarm discounts, safety equipment discounts.

I had SF for over 20 years for HI and two to three vehicles. I never put in a claim on any of the policies. After Katrina, they red lined my house because it was within "1000 feet of the water" on Long Island Sound and had near 100' of elevation. I switched the vehicles to Nationwide, but they wouldn't touch the HI either. A local LI outfit would do it for a little more $.

It seems their actuarial department couldn't distinguish between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sound.

I DISAGREE, State Farm is a POS Ins Company. I have had two run ins with them and they were Deceitful both times. I would suggest Farm Bureau.

I shop rates every six months or so. So far, nobody has beaten GEICO. forget their website, call them for a quote. YMMV of course, I have a male teen driver at home.

+1 on Liberty Mutual. I have been treated right on claims on both my homeowners and auto policies.

I was with State Farm years ago. Got rear ended by a drunk who hit 4 of us. I was furthest away and had under 3K on the car.

Both of us were with State Farm.

It took me demanding a conference call with the agent(*******) and the SF district office to get my issues resolved. Only fair to say I did bring up the words 'retained' and the name of a well known junk yard dog type local lawyer in the short blunt chat we had.

Maybe it was the 'collectively and individually' part of our chat that got their attention ?

Car was in the shop 3 wks, mostly waiting for parts from offshore but was repaired using new parts only.
