State of the Union

Reactions?

On a side note, watching watching Brit Hume and Charles Krauthammer argue in HD is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. The throat and cheek flappage is downright scary!

I knew somebody would bring it up, just about now.
Did he say '1 million electric cars by 2050'?

Well done by Fox news. They did not over talk the President during his speech. I always watch Fox during the SOU when one of "my" guys are in office and this time they were actually live. Ie... no delay to formulate decanter.

Although the first thing out fo Krauthammer's mouth was "I thought it was terrible" Yeah, didn't see that one coming! Always interesting to flip back and forth between MSNBC and FNC, though I think Juan Williams had a very good quick analysis

Copy and pasted from my facebook status:

And while everyone is feeling proud of their hope, lets not forget about the things the Democrats haven't done 1. A real private option 2. A copyright treaty hidden from congress under the guise of national security 3. Continuously allowing the Patriot Act to be renewed 4. Net neutrality or lack thereof.
Sad when both parties use less important issues to blur the real ones.

I watched most of it....flipping back and forth with the Purdue Ohio state massacre.

I liked the tone of it. Serious but hopeful. A big emphasis on working together and mention of specific concepts which are important to both sides of the aisle.

In the beginning when he mentioned guys like himself making good, fellows who started out working in their dad's store and (the new speaker) getting his start sweeping the floor in his father's tavern, I am pretty sure the new Speaker teared up for a minute.

So I felt there was more genuine positive reactions from the loyal opposition than usual.

Of course speaking of working with the R's is a practical reality at the present....not an altruistic thing which the President is going to do just because he likes them!

I like the fact that he set goals and talked about all the positive things that has made the US great in the past and how we need to do it again by looking forward.

That what of the who, now?

I haven't watched in decades and my streak continues. I had DVR'd episodes of Ax Men to catch up on.

I watched part of it. I couldn't find a whole lot to criticize. His airplane reference bombed, but there was a joke that seemed to get everyone laughing. Maybe it wasn't ment as a joke.
Overall, I think he quite well. Also, facing reality that some of his cherished projects would need their funding trimmed. I think his mention of balancing what corperations pay in taxes is long over due. I think this applies to individuals. I didn't hear the whole thing, so I don't know if he mentioned a rewrtie of import taxes etc. It was one of his campaign promises. That is well over due too.
I do think there was a tone, that with China and other countries, it can be a win-win. Right now it isn't. There is some promises of change, but I think a lot more jobs than projected could be relized, if the palying field were leveled. I think China would see better long term gains too.
I didn't see any of his usuall, let's work together, then point fingers and say its the other guys holding this up, they need to do it my way. Still, no concrete way in how all this is going to happen and be paid for.

I thought he said by 2015, and I believe that is reasonable. I liked the part about a simplified corporate tax, getting rid of the loopholes and eventually lowering the corporate taxes once everybody is paying their fair share. Personally, I think it's time to start taxing churches. If we can't rid ourselves of religion, the gov'ment should at least collect.

I saw parts as well and it was the salmon joke....I have to admit it was actually pretty funny.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFcWz9eyovA

The video shows a little bit of laughter but it actually grew into an applause.

It did seem that the overall tone of the speech centered around the acknowledgment of government BS which needs to be changed.

Didn't watch - Obama's move to the right is a bit too hollow for me. Now he preaches fiscal responsibility?

Yes, that was it. Good comedic timing, and knowing to let the joke, if intended, take its own course.

Some of what I liked was he did mention freezes and cuts. But he did caution not to cut what would/could make money in the future. Also, some direction on education. There are adds on the radio in IN. They state only 60% of money recieved goes towards the classroom. Now is that political hype of an account a graft??
Still, remains to be seen. Also weather the Repubs buy into it.

Glad to see you're keeping an open mind, , although I didn't watch much of it, either. I have never found SOTU speeches to be very informative.

When did he do otherwise? By any objective measure, the Democrats have been the party of relative fiscal responsibility for the last 30 years or so. I say "relative" because all I have to compare them with is the GOP which has been a fiscal train wreck ever since Ronald Reagan came along.

How does one actually "freeze domestic spending" while financing new investments in infra-structure, electric cars and everything else he mentioned?
