Obviously a major malfunction
Oh, those pesky O-rings!
25 years ago today, the shuttle Challenger exploded after takeoff. RIP. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul60NlXVwyw&feature=fvst http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JKIZ7j20EA |

Yeah, I worked evenings back then and was home with our 3.5 YO and 6 month old. 3.5 yo son and I were watching it live. Then it went bad and all I could do was hug the kid. At taht age he didn't really understand the tragedy of the situation (especially since his mom was at her job as a teacher).
Local mid-day news anchor came on a few minutes later. She very obviously had been crying. My faith in her reports went way up that day. Not all the exploratory ships that put to sea come back. We forget that sometimes. |

NASA learned their lesson that day. When an engineer says don't fly, then don't fly!

Reminds me of a saying by Steve "Woz" Wozniak . . . if it's got a computer in it, it's going to fail sometime.

I was a kid back in highs chool in South Africa back then. I remember my grandmother walking into our living room and telling us that "something had happened" to the shuttle. We all went in to look at the news and were shocked. I'll remember that experience always. Part of America's greatness that was well recognized internationally. Not just the technology of space exploration but complete difference of attitude to it compared for example the Russians who did it all in secrecy. The US was prepared to let the world see everything in real time, both it's triumphs and tragedies.
