I am a retired police officer and my wife is a retired school teacher. we were both in our respective unions.
Having said this, I support what Governor Christie is trying to do. The politicians where we worked lied to us so often that we can't even figure out what is going on with our pension system.

Yes, unfortunately the politicians sold everyone a big bag of ?????
If they were the President, senior employee's or even board members of a private company and things were like this, EVERYONE would be doing time period. Look at Enron, WorldComm .... they are in jail. But look at some of these benie's, sick days you can accumulate GEESH. I'm sorry I worked in private industry for 40 years, not one company allowed any sick days to carry over, not one allowed vacation time to be carried over. My neighbor told me that he lost 2 weeks of vacation last year, ok he's been with the company for 25 years but THEY were too busy for him to take the time off. I still think if an employee at a private company accumulated a tiny % of the sick time the IRS would have been all over them demanding taxes NOW. The only thing I know close to that was back in the 70s a friends grandfather was retiring. He was in his 60s and had worked for the railroad since is he was 15 or 16 (back then you could). He had accumulated sick, overtime and vacation time (he was getting like 8 weeks of vacation the last 5 years, taking 3 maybe 4)throughout those years. He stopped working over 3 years before he "retired". He had to go into the office once a month, fill out a time sheet. During those 3 years he acquired several raises and continued to get more vacation and sick time. But I believe he was not allowed to "cash" it in, he had to use it, that is take it over time. Guaranteed raises, no layoff clauses, rules that all but prevent being fired. As Christie put it. You have a job, what about the 9 % of the public that doesn't.
