Scam enabled by the phone company
Our Verizon land line bill came this month with a new $14.95 charge on it from a place called ESBI. ESBI offers a bunch of questionable services under the names of Total Protection, voice mail services, fax services, etc.
When I called them, they said the charges were initiated by a family member visiting an employment web site. Only my name is on the phone bill, but apparently thats enough for them to start charging $14.95 each month. They had already charged 2 months to my Verizon bill, but promised to credit my account. We'll see. FYI - You need to explicitly tell your phone company to block any 3rd party charges like these.

"Third-party billing" still happens a lot; if you complain to your phone company, they'll remove it and offer a credit for all the past months you were charged. Yes, it's a BS scam helped out by the phone companies, and they know it's illegal. But, hey, money is money - right?
