The US has its foot in a bear trap on Gitmo.

Release the prisoners to where?
If they return home they may well be killed.
Nobody wants them here in the us.

I hear some places have empty prisons and have volunteered to take them but so far nothing has worked out, apparently.

Hatterasguy 02-14-2011 09:54 AM

Probably never, we can't release the prisoners and no one wants them.

OTOH we could just drag them all out back, shoot them, than close it. That would be the most cost affective, and most of these guys if they were not guilty to begin with a pretty pissed so would come back ofter us if released at this point.

Or we could give them to Israel for safe keeping, they are not as squeamish and would just shoot them.

It won't be closed.

I remember one particular pic that said it all.

The pic of President-elect Obama leaving his first briefing held jointly with President Bush.

This was the first one where the subjects are discussed above the seret level.

FYI: All Representatives and Senators are eligible for a SECRET collateral clearance, and eight who are on the House Intelligence Committee are eligible for a TS collateral clearance.

Well, the President-elect got his first briefing at the next level above that.

And it showed on his face: he looked like he had been kissed by an air hammer. And President Bush had the ***** eating grin on his face because he just handed the reins over, figuratively, now that his successor knew a LOT more of what really goes on.

So don't expect that any developers will be offering condos there any time soon.

It's really a shame because the scuba diving there is quite nice in those very clear waters.

They'll all die....sooner or later.
One died last week...after exercising.

Awal Gul fell in the shower Tuesday night after working out on an elliptical machine in Camp 6, a communal section of the Guantanamo reserved for well-behaved prisoners, said military spokesman Army Col. Scott Malcom. The prisoner was taken to the base hospital, where he later died.

Yes. Including the SCUBA. Ever go to the (so-called) sub bar?

The bleeding heart idiots from Berkeley, California (where else?) are considering passing a resolution to welcome any detainees that are released from Gitmo to their fair city. What a wonderful idea! And, seeing as that city has all their other affairs in order, why shouldn't they use their residents tax dollars to help out the poor helpless people who would slit their throat without batting an eye! I'm sure the budget is balanced, and there is no crime in Berkeley, so this is the perfect project for the Berkeley "public servants"! I'm sure property values will skyrocket as people flock to Berkeley to live in such an enlightened utopia! I think I'll invest some $$$ in property there tomorrow so I don't miss out on this golden opportunity:rolleyes:

t walgamuth 02-14-2011 11:12 PM

So someone is willing to take this multimillion dollar a year operation off the hands of the government and you ridicule them?

In a nutshell- yes. I thought it was clear that Berkeley wanted to welcome RELEASED detainees, not take over the detention center. If they did though I wonder if they would waterboard with "Perrier":D

Nah. My only trip to GITMO was for an ORI. :rolleyes:The crew never left the ship. Aside from trudging around with the AC secured holding G/Q drills, the most memorable event of that trip was having a real "This is no drill" GQ piped over the 1MC on the way home. (Alarm went off in a forward magazine (or so they said;)))

Botnst 02-15-2011 06:43 PM

We went to GTMO after commissioning and then again after an extended refit yard visit in Philly. 6 wks each time. GQ 2-3 times a day. Boarding & securing. UNREP. Then the in port the freaking UDT/SEALs attacked us a couple of times -- and sunk us. B-Div stood port and starboard watches both times. I got to where I didn't know WTF time it was, just that I had watch. Ding-ding! It was intense training and the evaluators were very tough.

The lease is indefinite. Initially, it started as a 99 year thing in 1903 but some time in the 30s the Cubans doubled the rent but made it an 'annual tenancy.'
