There are so many MB's in Boston that I think people just overlook my clattering and old 300CD I've got compliments from random people though like Mike said.. they wonder how such an old car looks good after 19 years!

In fact I've got treatments like "this thing's gonna break down on the highway or no way this thing's gonna keep up w/ the highway traffic" until I took them on a ride at 90mph... hahah they were so quiet...probably afraid that they might not come home

Do people at work make fun of your Mercedes.

To add to what this great forum has put out, my late father used to brainwash me and my car-crazy brothers about Mercedes Benz. I'll never forget what he used to say:

" If you want people to think you have money, own one."

"When you own a Mercedes Benz, you owe no one an apology for owning one."

" Forget the "wanna be" BMW's, Lexus,
Acura's"..... just get the one they really want to be... Mercedes Benz"

How true, huh? Wise words, Dad! Thanks for brainwashing me!

Oops! To prove to you my Dad succeeded, (with little or no resistance on my part, mind you), my wife and I share these great MB's:

'85 280SEL euro (44k orig. mi)
'90 300E
'98 ML320

One thing I feel and I'm sure all the members here do is that when i forked out my money for our MB's, I felt I got a lot more car for my money.

Can't say that about a few other brands out there....

Talking

I just tell them that after seeing how my last MB looked after my daughter totaled it 2 weeks after her 17th birthday last November ( and how really, really wrecked the car she hit was), the only car to replace that Benz was another one.

Then I tell them that for what I paid for my prestine drop dead gorgeous garnett red 1988 300CE with 41,000 miles on it I could have purchased say, a 1998 Chevy Impala with 65,000 miles or maybe a 1995 Ford Explorer with 90,000 miles on it.

Then, if their eyebrows are still bent out of shape, I tell them to read my license plate: " LYTINUP "

Anyway, as my late father used to say: "Illegitimi non carborundum"

Jim

going against the traditional stuffy MB image

... I definitely like to go against that stuffy image while still maintaining MB's class and integrity. I got my '85 300TDT as a handmedown from mom. yes, it's a wagon, and at 17 (when i got it), i hated it! since it has grown on me to the point where i can't ever let it go.

so anyways, to make the wagon not look so much like a 'grocery getter,' i've personalized it with some stickers. also, in warm weather, i will often put my surfboard up on the roof. when it's not up there, the quicksilver hibiscus pads are still on the rack to give it a younger feel. in the winter, i have a pair of ski's on the roof with yakima racks.

everyone seems to love the way it looks! it's go this retro, classy stylish look to it - the girls love it, the guys are jealous, and i enjoy not owning a grocery getter anymore.

cheers!
eric

Man, I know I've told you before, but that's the best looking damn wagon I've ever seen! I'm jealous! :p

Mike, Don, Tank thanks for your compliments.

to answer your question tank about the chrome mirrors, everything on the car is original, even the paint- however, i DID have the wheels repainted.. they did an amazing job for $125 for all four wheels.

Mike ive admired your S as well, if i end up moving to atlanta we should get together! those S's are always quite stunning and i bet your new chrome wheels really look nice!

cheers
eric

Hey, thanks! Are you considering moving here for work, or what? I love it here...I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon. I would advise against living in the 'burbs and working downtown, however...BAD traffic. If you work downtown, live downtown...It's fun down here, anyway!

Yeah, I love the wheels, but I lost a center cap and I'm having a b!+ch of a time finding another to fit. Anyway, here's a picture.

The only thing I get is , "why did you get that noisey diesel, I hate diesel" I just let them know you don't hear it in side the car, and I didn't buy it for you

Talking Driving a Benz

I only drive/own a C180, but its a Benz whatever size and has that distinctive star on the hood to prove it. Friends think I've won the big Lotto or received some unknown inheritance. Others like work mates think the same way though some think I'm doing some strange sideline job or business ,hence the mysterious wealth! At red lights, some idiots stare and give me the usual hate look like I'm some drug dealer or swindling con man. I usually say its my sister's car, they have gone on holidays or its a loan car, mine has gone in for some major surgery and they didn't have anything else to give me. The stare is as though you've spent too much, we don't think you look or dress like you can afford one. Mine was cheap compared to the new ones and those used ones in the better yards. Had some fixing to do and replacement parts, but alls turned out quite well indeed.

Motoring in a Benz

I've caught some good natured flak from coworkers as well as family. I work for the local school system and have heard "pimpmobile" and "we know who makes all the money now" (the principal had been wondering who owned it til he saw me pull up one morning). My wife told me that the only reason I bought my '91 300SE was for the "status symbol". Many, thinking it is a new car, are rather shocked to find out that the Benz is in fact 12 years old (and everything works). I could have spent the $5500 I paid for it on some POS and have it last maybe 2 years, but with the Benz, worth about $12-13,000, I couldn't go wrong.

I did some research on MB before buying it and IF having the safest, most reliable, longest running, and comfortable car in the world means having to endure the "status symbol" mentality, I'll gladly do it again when the wife's Focus eventually wears out.
