Thinking of getting a motorcycle...

Been talking to some friends and looking at them, and kinda want one now.

I have life insurance, so we are covered there. I have my go-fast and cornering cars, this would just be something to commute to work on during the summer....

Thoughts....?

Unless you have dependants, I wouldn't much worry about life insurance. If you die, what does it matter is my view on that. What is important is health and disability/dismemberment insurance, in case you live through a horrific wreck, unless you have no assets, or have a negative net worth balance sheet, or live in Canada. Then you don't need health insurance. It is not uncommon to lose part of an arm or leg in a motorcycle wreck. I see it all the time out and about - guys under 40 without legs because of horrific MC wrecks.

That said, I'd buy a large cc Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/Suzuki 4 cylinder Japanese crotch rocket. Something capable of 8 to 10 second quarter miles. $11K to $15K should cover the cost of most new very fast superbikes off the showrrom floor I would think.

What is your budget?

take an MSF rider safety course, esp if you have never rode before. If you can, log some hours off road on a dirt bike: you'd be amazed how much you will learn about controling a bike doing that.

Dang, 111k....?

My budget is about 8k.

I do not plan on buying new (they depreciate quick), but plan on buying something newer, like 05+.

I rode a friends CBR600 and another friends GSX, and those were pretty nice.

If you decide to, get some time in before you put a chick on the back. my only real white knuckle moments were when the chick leaned the wrong way. best fix is to make them hug you tight. Also, wear a helmet for gods sake, if not fill out your organ doner card.

Typo - fixed it. $11K and Up!

I wouldn't waste my money on just a 600 cc bike. You're going to come up short on it real soon. NOT QUICK ENOUGH> Get on up to the 1,100 to 1,300 cc range - then you won't be short on speed, power and quickness. $8K wouldn't cut it for the top-shelf stuff, not new anyway.

I stopped in the Kawasaki/Yamaha dealer up on the Interstate service road about three years ago. I was entranced with the large cc 4 cyl. dual exhaust model bigtime. I asked the friendly bike sales rep. on the floor if he had anything in the 7 or 8 second area. He didn't. He seemed a bit miffed why I'd ask for something that fast. He said the best they had was in the near 10 second 1/4 mile area. If I knew I wouldn't lose a leg or crash one, I'd of bought one years ago - I like speed and especially QUICKNESS as much as a 20 yr. old.

What good does life insurance do? You ain't gonna get to collect it. First, see if your employer offers long term/short term disability insurance. Given the risks of motorcycling, it is the smartest thing in the world to have. Believe it or not, your risk of being maimed for life are a lot higher than just being killed. Ah, don't mention the motorcycle to the insurance people....

I have three motorcycles. My "commuter" bike is a 2009 Honda VTX 1300. It is water cooled, which means if you get stuck in the kind of traffic we have in Houston, you're engine doesn't fry. It's also a powerful and comfortable bike, on the down side, the thing drives like a truck. I also have a 2004 Sportster 1200 XLC, which I also use for puttering around town. It's all souped up with all kinds of crap, which you have to do or the rice burners will make you eat $hit. Sportsters handle like a dream.

You can pick up all kinds of nice used Sportsters for five grand or less, they are a great bike if you want to ride a Harley cheap, and if you are looking to get laid. Ricers never get any, Hoggers get it all the time.

I also have a 2010 Heritage Softail. I usually only ride it to rallies or on long bike trips, mainly because I don't want to run up the miles on the little jewel.

You can't go wrong with any of the Honda's, great bikes, extremely reliable, and dirt cheap used. Either a Honda V twin or a Sportster fits your 8 grand budget.

I'm looking at getting one too. Commute and fun. So far my wife has not put the cabash on this idea...

Take the safety course. I'm also thinking about taking more advanced courses.

I'm looking at the Ducati 696 Monster. http://www.ducati.com/bikes/monster/696/index.do

BMW F650 is considered a good starter bike.

Your going to die, 3 months ago one of my uncles renters was killed on his Harley when a moron driving an Explorer pulled out of a McDonald's, probably texting.

Rider was wearing protective gear, slammed into the side of the SUV at 40-45, went flying, broke his back or neck I forget and was dead in an hour.

If he was in a car/truck wearing his seat belt he would most likely have walked away with no/minor injuries.

Screw bikes to many morons on the road. You can be the best rider in the world and do everything right, all it takes is one moron driving a 5k pound SUV to kill you. At least if your in a car you have a fighting chance.

Ahhh, some of my friend tell me "better get your life insurance in order" when I tell them I want a bike...

I want this for commuting, not for weekend stuff, thats why I want a 600. No point in getting more if I dont need it.

You'll wish you had bought a bigger bike in about 90 days. Anything under 1200 CC's is for wimps.

Hmm, that Ducati looks nice, but out of my budget!

I will look into the BMW.

600 wouldn't cut it - not for my need for speed and quickness.

That's an 'entry level' bike, to me anyway.
