Tempted by this nice looking G-Wagen...

Ok -

Here I go again... sorry about another rambling post about my search for an expedition vehicle. I've seen enough abused and overpriced Land Cruisers, boring Jeeps (sorry Tyler) and plain 4Runners.

Came accross this beautiful G-Wagen on expeditionportal.com:
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56204

If you can't see the portal without registering here is the ad for it on CL:
http://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/2200047536.html

I like everything about the vehicle and it's even close to my price range ($11K).... spoke with the owner earlier today and he'd be willing to entertain $11+something... The only problem is: RUST. This truck has some - the pics shown reveal some rust in the floor boards under the driver's seat and around the tail lights there is some surface rust. He didn't show the pics underneath (maybe too scary?!).

Anyway - I know the rust is bad I just wonder if this one may be worth saving and repairing or am I gonna loose my a$$ on it?!

You've got to admit that Lapis Blau is a nice color on it... Please talk me out of this truck... I respond well to big$$$ spent - I'm fairly cheap.

I wouldn't pull the trigger on a G-Wagon likes this without looking at the rust in person.

Only choice is to fly to Maryland and be willing to turn around and fly home if it's too problematic. That seller has had at least one other G-Wagon on the portal and has generated a fair amount of heated discussion about the quality and price of his vehicles. I'm always a little leary of flippers but that's probably because I really want the deals that allow them to be flippers.

I've read some of those posts and thought they got pretty heated - which made me leary as well.... the guy was definitely doing a sales job on me on the phone. He's only 20 years old, I guess - not bad.

I'll pass on it - but too bad, it sure is nice looking from 2000 miles away...

Dear used car sellers; if you're going to mention rust you better post a non-resized picture of the exact spots since you know already where it is and how bad it is. All digital point and shoot camera's now are of amazing quality. Every car I've sold with rust had pictures, there's no use hiding it or downplaying how bad it is. Plus "normal" or "not that bad" rust to anyone east of say, Nebraska, is a hell of a lot different than, say, Colorado rust.

That being said, people are idiots. Here's a few good ones I've been told before going to look at a car.

Little dent in rear quarter = rear end collision.
Minor dent in front fender = front end collision
Paint "chips" on door = 2" layer of Bondo cracking across entire door, flaking paint.
Little rust = whole m*thrfarking thing is swiss cheese.

Anything prefaced with "Little" or "Minor" usually isn't or it would've been fixed by now.

Just have it shipped and then if you don't like it, sell it. The shipping is what it would cost to go look at it anyway. I wouldn't let the distance stop me from buying something I wanted, it never has before. It took me and the seller of my last diesel coach I bought, 1,500 miles away, 30 seconds to agree to a price, and it was a done deal. Should be an easy deal to make (get cheap) because the guy needs to sell it at a discount because of it's wear damage. Right?

These MB SUVs are a very hot commodity, so I wouldn't think it would take very much to turn it in Colorado, if you buy it right.

Actually, my '99 12 year old MB bought brand new that I'm driving right now, I bought over the phone. I had a 2 minute total conversation with the sales rep. on price, and I said; I'll take it. Done deal.

Pretty sure it still is available - unless he sold it after our conversation last night... Looks like he's been trying to sell it since early February of this year. Some of the comments on it (on expeditionportal.com) got pretty heated up...

You would have to look at in person to see if its worth fixing or not. The rust may not be that bad, but you would have to get underneath it and poke around. Since this a body on frame truck the condition of the frame is very important because if that rusts through its a parts truck.

I'd also wonder how expensive it is to fix, can you even get floor pans and rear quarters for those things in this country? I have a feeling that body would suck down $5k-$10k to have a good body shop go through it and cut out and re weld metal, paint etc, provided you can get the parts.

IMHO I know G's are rare but its a $5k truck to me, $13k is a ton of money to spend on an old rusty truck with star ship mileage on it, its essentially a hard top Wrangler with a MB star stuck on it, and you can get a lot of Wrangler for $13k.
