Posting from Vancouver

We're in the downtown YWCA. First time we've been to Vancouver. Great city so far. Our daughter is interested in the University of BC so we're here to check it out. Any UBC grads here who can give us the inside scoop?
Flew in Seattle this morning and drove up here. Will be ferry to Victoria and then Port Angeles and driving down the coast to check out Reed College and finally Univ of Washington in Seattle before flying back home.

By the way, real estate prices are crazy here. $305K for a 474 sq ft studio.

You clearly never looked at some prices in North Vancouver
Everything close to the Sky Train it is very expensive, however if you just renting you could find some very good accommodation for around 400 a month.
If you wanna see a beautiful place just drive across the bridge on highway 1 and turn right on Dollarton Hwy, follow for about 5 miles and this will lead you to Deep Cove, go to Panorama Park and be prepared for some spectacular views. I remember the first time I saw the place I was speechless.

That was my starting point in 2003 for an Alaskan cruise. I wish I had more time there. The city had a great vibe.

Welcome to the pacific northwest, you're in my neck of the woods. Hope your trip is going well. I don't know much about UBC, but yes, Vancouver is a fantastic city. You'll have fun in Victoria too, I'm sure, it's very pretty and seems quite British. You'll get some great scenery from Victoria to Portland. This the the most beautiful part of the country as far as I'm concerned.

As colleges go, I dunno if your daughter is considering UW, or if you're just going to look for fun, but if she is considering, I recommend against it. As a UW graduate and current employee, I think the UW is not a good school for undergrads; too big. It's a research institution, many teachers are more interested in their own research than teaching and a lot of courses are taught by TAs. Additionally, it's crazy to think about paying out of state tuition to attend the UW. In the future, if your daughter is considering grad schools the UW is very competitive in a number of fields. Also, you do happen to be visiting at the perfect time to see the yoshino cherry trees in the quad in bloom. I think the trees' beauty have swayed more than a few high school seniors in their college decision...watch out!

While you're over on the peninsula I think you should swing by Port Townsend and pick this beast up to continue your trip in...

And you thought housing over here was expensive.

That's very cool. I've owned a couple of those. That one looks home made.

She is considering UW. Colorado and Washington have a reciprocal in=state tuition agreement so she can get resident tuition there. I'll take into account the teaching issues. That's a problem, but it could be a problem at most large state universities I think. UBC has two categories of professors, research professors and teaching professors. Perhaps that is an attempt to avoid this problem I have a former colleague who is a teaching professor at UBC who is going to show us around today. I'll ask her if that set up helps avoid that problem. If it does, it's a huge advantage for UBC. My daughter would get resident tuition at UBC also since she's a dual US/Canadian citizen.

That Colorado/Washington tuition agreement is a great deal. How'd the rest of your trip go? Too bad the regional weather's been so crummy lately.

Loved the drive from Port Angeles to Portland along the coast. Rained the whole time though. Only spent a short time in Victoria. UW tour went pretty well. My daughter liked it. She may have liked UBC better. The whole area was very appealing but I don't know if I could tolerate the cloudiness coming from Colorado.

The weather here lately has been exceptionally dreary, exceptionally. I don't have the stats for Seattle, but this is Portland's fifth wettest winter on record and the latest on record in getting to 60 degrees. Fortunately I'll be taking a brief hiatus from this gloomy weather when I leave for Austin this Friday. I see the UW tour groups all the time, I think the campus shows really well to newcomers; it is a nice campus (in spite of the constant construction). Good luck to your daughter in her decision.

The amount of construction on campus amazed me. Where is the money coming from? Colorado schools have very little money for expansion now. There were tons of people on the tour, far more than the other schools we visited. The cherry blossoms in the quad were beautiful. The dead bloated rat floating in the fountain not as much.

I attended the U Dub 84/85. One of my professors, an Ivy Leaguer, said that the U was the only west coast school, in his opinion, that gave the storied east coast universities a run for their money in terms of architectural grandeur. Of course there are a few modern monstrosities, but it is pretty cool, the quads and Suzzallo library especially.

Crowds of Japanese tourists come to campus during cherry blossom time. They love that stuff. There's a word in japanese that translates roughly to "watching cherry blossoms."
