McDonalds Announces Plan to Hire Up to 50,000 In US on April 19th

McDonald's said it and its franchisees will spend more than $518 million in wages and salaries in the coming year, and that the 50,000 more hires will translate to $54 million more in payroll taxes for the economy. The additional wages will translate to almost $1.4 billion in annual spending.

Makes one wonder if they are anticipating a protest/rovolt/revolution

518,000,000 divide by 50,000 equals $10,300. That's poverty level pay right there. Last I checked at my old minimum wage job, I didn't have to pay any federal taxes. The state and local taxes on the other hand, well haha. I hope a large portion of that goes to salary managers at a decent level of pay.

50,000 part time jobs for teenagers and other unskilled labor doesn't help bolster our economy in any way. We need high skilled labor jobs.

That being said, I love McDonald's burgers and fries :cool:

We also need higher skilled workers.

Hopefully, my daughter (who has been "looking for a job" for about six months) can land one of those 50k jobs.

People don't appreciate skilled labor. They'd rather pay $4.50 for a slice of factory made cake than $5.50 for a chocolate souffle.

I did the same calculation when I saw this report this morning. Sure for an entry level or part time job that's fine but beyond that? Not really worth it. I'll enjoy McDonalds when I eat it which on average is usually once every 3 years....

I just saw a report that stated unemployment amongst college grads was 4%-5% which IMHO is pretty good.

For high school grads it was much higher.

To me this say's unless you want to flip burgers you better get a degree/license/certification in a good field.

Didn't McDonalds get an exemption from Obamacare?

They were part of a group of about 30 companies that last year demanded a waiver on complying with one of the initial requirements of OC - having to provide $750K total coverage for all of their employees. They told the government that if they didn't get the waiver, one of two things would happen - the premiums their employees paid would go up by double or more, or they would drop medical coverage for their employees altogether.

Government rolled right over and gave them the waiver.:rolleyes:

Hmm, perhaps there is some segment of the population that appreciates the ability to work, earn some money, whether it's at a McDonalds restaurant or not. The income might help a family make ends meet, perhaps take some of the stress off, and certainly be better than being unemployed.

Or are unemployed Americans too good to work for a paycheck?

I've recently had the opportunity to give that question some consideration. The fundamental questions to answer first are whether the particular unemployed person is eligible for unemployment compensation, whether they can make ends meet on that, and whether they have other sources of income. In my case those answers were yes, yes, and not any worth speaking of. Consequently, I would be very reluctant to accept a position that paid less than what unemployment pays. I'm still looking for "good" jobs, and finally put in my first application (and no it wasn't to McDonalds) after getting back from the sandbox. I don't actually become unemployed until tomorrow at midnight, however.
