Dexos oil

Just bought a 2011 Buick Lacrosse and the dealer said they charge 35.00 for an oil change. I asked what kind of oil and was it synthetic. He said it was.
My question is this,is it a synthetic oil? And how does it compare to Mobile 1?

An oil change for my wife's Pontiac G8 GT, with Mobil 1, just set me back $85.

Of course, it holds almost nine quarts of oil. Still, I might check with the GM dealer to see if they have a flat price for a dexos oil change. You never know.

And for what it's worth... I used to run Mobil 1 in my 1984 VW Van. I changed oil every 25,000 miles and finally sold it with about 350,000 miles on it.

No engine problems due to oil. Head gaskets, though... If you have ever owned a water cooled Vanagon you know what I mean.

The Dexos is a synthetic with additives, therefore you'll end up at the dealer for an oil change. Thanks, GM!

It's GM's new oil spec which replaced all the older ones. Here is the official list, but realistically any GF5 5w30 would work fine.

http://www.gmdexos.com/licensedbrands.html

Quaker State Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic, Pennzoil Platinum, and Mobil 1 are some common oils on the list, if you want to DIY it you can usually find them on sale at one of the chain stores for about $30 for 5 quarts and a filter.

As for the change interval follow the OLM GM's is very good. My trucks goes off between 6k-8k, I would expect a new Buick would be around 10k-14k.

$35 is not a bad deal, that's what it cost me using Mobil one + filter and I have to crawl underneath the car.

Same Old,Same Old.

It's ILLEGAL under the MM act for G.M. to even try to tell you what oil to use
UNLESS they provide it to you FREE!

G.M. trying to Terrorize owners into driving into the Dark Hole of the Stealer's
Service Lane.

Nothing they can roll off the Production lines that won't run for Hundreds of
thousands of Miles on Mobil 1.

It's a fantastic deal especially for synthetic oil. Cheaper than the JiffyLube type places too I bet.

I wouldn't go that far without some sort of oil analysis to confirm it. I wouldn't want to wreck something.

Oil changes are a "loss leader". My shop manager friend told me it cost them $3 to do an oil change. Hence the "upsell".

Is it really a good idea to put synthetic oil in a new engine?
