Depends on the sort of road trip.

Long distance... Big ol' sedan.

Back in 2002 I went with a friend to Scottsdale AZ to the auction. He bought a 380SL and a 560SEC. We drove those two cars all the way back home in three days to Canada just a bit NE of Detroit. That was one of the nicest driving cars I've ever been in. A great road car and anything less would have been a real chore.

I disagree with the previous comment about an SL =)

Any year SL is just unique enough to not be just another sedan and being able to drop the top is definitely a plus for me...especially if your trip takes you near the beach. SL's also probably are better in the NVH category for most convertibles made in that same model year- good if you have a lot of freeway time.

I agree with the companion part also. Either a best friend or my wife (I have that kinda marriage =) would be important - Being with someone would be an integral part of this journey *If* you were only going on a 'road trip' for the sake of going on a road trip.
...now if you are going on a road trip to pick up a car, or visit a long lost friend/place/home/childhood memory/concubine...maybe a best friend or wife wouldnt be the best choice (lols)- not many of my best friends are car guys, or ex-military, pimps, or computer geeks =)

a suitable companion would really be more important than any car- and once you have that - who cares what kinda car it is ?

Hell, I'm 60 now and I would still enjoy it!

Cars:

-- A 2CV with a spare engine in the trunk
-- a 126 body with a 617 or a 603 in it
-- a C-body Chrysler with a 440 cu and 727 trans
-- a 318 Dodge van with 4 speed trans, empty with a sleeping bag

In a similar van, I drove from Detroit to Victorville CA, picked up a car, dropped it back off in northerm MI for storage, then drove to DC for work, stayed 3 days then drove back to MI. 6500 miles in 9 days

Needless to say I was exhausted

I just finished reading Peter Egan's "On the Road", a compilation of some of his road trip columns off the Interstate highways.
At every chapter ( almost), I found myself wanting to duplicate the trip I was reading. Imagine driving halfway across the country in a Lotus 7, or a Bug eye Sprite, or a Citroen 2CV, or a CJ5 , or a Model A Ford, or a Ferrari Dino...

So what is on your short list for a road trip? Both the car and the route.

I live on the east coast, so a Fall drive down skyline drive is a natural. But the car? I think I'd like an open car for this kind of a trip, and probably a fellow male car-nut to share the driving. I have a willing friend with a TR6 ( whose wife would undoubtedly not object to him being out of the house for a while), and that may happen, but a 2CV would also have certain charm. My 300SD is too "modern" for this kind of a road trip. I expect an SL would also be rather mundane. Then again, I've always loved the Ford Model A--the "T" being just a little too primitive.

Another thought--what makes the trip "special"? Is it encountering and then overcoming the obstacles? So do you need a car that "might" break down at any minute? Is it the people you meet? Or the destination? Egan surely contributes to the mix. I wonder if he is available.

So what car and what route appeals to you?
I've been travelling the country in my own diesel-powered coach for 25 years now.

If you are interested in purchasing a totally self-contained, top-shelf, (diesel-powered) coach
like mine== wont be Active much the next few days
I know where there is a nice one-owner for sale at a fair price. Not all that far from you.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a night in a hotel/motel (YUK!) again versus the cost, convenience and travel price of your own coach on the road.

I read John Steinbeck's 'Travels With Charley' In Search of America,' many years ago. It is a chronical of travel by John Steinbeck and his Poodle, Charley. They set off across America from the New England coast in a 3/4 ton pickup with an archaic camper shell on it's bed.

In my young life of 38 years OTR, I have spent literally years on-the-road, and not near enough of them in my own coach somewhere in America.

Some will never know the freedom of spirit and expense it brings not living in your car and a motel room on the road.

We like to vacation with our travel trailer.

I have friends who say "I like to camp in the Holiday Inn".

I always say "My trailer is like a suite in the Holiday Inn but I know who slept in my bed the night before and what they did".

If you don't intend to go off-road, nor do the distance as a race, then any regular car will do as long as it's not too small, I'd say. I'm planning a two-month roadtrip myself for next year, driving from Amsterdam to Vladivostok, and back, following the Trans-Siberian Highway from Moscow. Last section from Irkutsk is now asphalt aswell (thanks Mr. Putin). I'm not buying another car for this trip, my regular 5-series will be fine. Hotels/motels/private rooms only, can't wait

I'm in my 50s and I won't be ready to retire to traveling in a motorhome anytime soon, hopefully I will never feel that old. The whole point of traveling is to get away from all your crap, not to take it with you.

Ok, need more details. Distance each way and how much you plan to drive each day. Any specific places you plan to stop and see things?

That's your opinion.
If you want to travel for a coupla weeks in a 2 seat sports car I say go for it. I've BTDT and I have it out of my system.

I've done the coast to coast gig on a motorcycle a couple of times. The whole she-bang. Sleeping bag, camp stove, tent, washing in mountain streams (VASTLY over-rated by the way) and I'd NEVER do it again. Guess my bones got brittle with age or abuse. Big ol' sedan, comfy seats, HOT meals, real showers and a soft bed for me now.

Now, going fishing on the other hand...

Yup, I may change my opinion some day; but I hope I never get that old.
