Unhappy * Got backed into ... and the guy's insurance is... *

Friday afternoon, my '76 450SLC got backed into by a guy who has PROGRESSIVE as his insurance.

Am I in for a long load of BS with this company?

I couldn't get Collision from my company because the car is over 10 y.o.. They don't issue that. However, I do have under-insured as well as non-insured coverage.

Am I going to get pooched on this or not?

BTW, the damage was to the driver's side, just behind the edge of the door and in front of the rear wheel well. The door works well, no windage sounds at highway speeds and the DSR window still operates. I'll see if I can post some pics. The ones I shot with my "pocket" camera are too detailed and I can't resize 'em to safe my life.

Not sure. I have Progressive, and I was involved in an at fault accident involving some property damage in '04. I was late for work and going a bit faster than I should have been. Things happened and I left the roadway, demolishing about 40' of barbed wire fence. As of the time I stopped driving that road about 2 years later, the fence hadn't been fixed, but I never heard whether the insurance paid or how much.

When the little girl ran the red light and totaled my '87 560SEL, they paid off no problem. Actually the best to work with I have seen. If it wasn't for their scams like the "snapshot" discount, and that blasted Flo woman, I'd consider switching to them.

Guy who totaled my car last year had Progressive. They were actually relatively easy to deal with, and gave a fair price for the car, were willing to pay for a loaner up to a week too. The way they valued the car was interesting though - they did a search for cars selling in the general area and based the value on that (I think? its how they explained it to me, there must be more to it than that) but it came out spot on for the year and condition, I would have been selling it for that price and probably gotten a bit less. Overall not a bad experience other than losing my faithful steed .

Most insurance companies are very aggressive on claim settlements so keep your gaurd up. Arm yourself with an independent repair estimate so you know what this repair should cost. On the estimate you recieve from Progressive make sure no where on the form does it have written in, or checked "No supplements".

Were you in the car when it happened? A threat of possible injury might keep them honest.

How would collision help? He backed into you not the other way around.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on how well armed you come to the fight. IF all you have is your wiener in your hand it will be a long day. Find what cars of your type and condition sell for in your area. Find 3 REPUTABLE body shop estimates in your area that are reasonably close. Remember, you ae under NO obligation to take their suggested body shop if you are not comfortable with it. If 3 guys say the repair is $3000 and one guy says he can do it for $1000-1500, run. There is a corner or two or three being cut there.

thats what state farm did to me last year, they went from sales of like vehicles in the state with similar miles.well my 2000 jetta tdi was totalled.which beings i'm from iowa probably helped alot as there are not many tdi jetta's here period.and my car had over 400k miles at the time.they were gonna pay me 5900 for it.but i kept the car and took the 4800 they offered for me keeping it.about 1000 later it was back on the road.but they put something they called diminished value on the claim,so if say i am hit by another state farm insured and it's their fault they will not pay me as much as this time.

I take it that "No Supplements" means that if something comes up (bent frame, etc...) that couldn't be seen before the repair work starts, they won't pay for it...right?

Yep...almost got my left hand in the way...about to pull a "Superman-One-Hand-Stop" when I thought, "This day is REALLY GOING TO SUCK if I accomplish this feat of idiocy!" and decided to let the car hit the car. There was no way I could have gotten out of the way as fast as this situation developed...

All I know is that my insurance agent mentioned it right away...sorta' as a reminder that I didn't have the collision coverage...I hadn't gotten to the part of telling her that I was the one that got hit. It wasn't me being the "hitter." Sorta' put her at ease at that point...

I intend to have "MY BODYSHOP" look at this before anyone else. They've done some work on my 280E and it's held its own. They've worked on the S-10 after the 2 deer hits and I haven't had issues with that work either. I'll be set when I see their "repair shop" tomorrow morning.

Well, there are a few SLs around here...not more than 10 or so...but for SLCs? I've seen only one. And it's about 2 years newer...so we'll see what's up with the story on that...if it gets that far.

However...I'm not going to be waiting 'til fall for a check from these folks...I want the damage fixed and done (unless, of course, the parts HAVE to come in from Germany...) and the check will go directly to my repair shop...I don't want to be handling any of the paperwork outside of getting the thing fixed and back on the road...door working properly and sealing properly. If it doesn't have that familiar MB-Solid *THUNK!* when it closes, back it goes until it sings the proper song. Period. No rattles or shakes.

Comprehensive/collision coverage helped us to the tune of $2000 a few years ago.

'83 SD was rear-ended by a Honda. Statements at the scene left no doubt that this was not the first car that the 19-year-old driver had totaled.

The SD was bent, but drivable. The Honda left on a truck. The Honda's insurance company offered $1000, or we could sue them.

Collision/comprehensive (don't recall which) gave $3000 minus $500 deductible. A few months later, the $500 arrived in the mail.

Collision insurance pays to fix the insured's car no matter who is at fault. Under/un insured insurance usually only covers bodily injuries, but that goes by state.

UPDATE: Their (Progressive) claim agent met me, I spent about 45 minutes with him, he went over the parts that they expected to to change out, he took about 30 pictures, then showed me what he expected the repair to cost (<$3K). I then took the estimate over to my bodyshop, they took it and went of the car...and they're pretty sure it's about as accurate as can be expected due to what can be seen. The Progressive Agent called the next day and after a very corgial (sp?) conversation, he agreed to work with my body shop to get the car back to original. The only issue? About two days after I got hit, our area took 70-80mph winds and fist-sized hail...I didn't get pasted with it but ALOT OF FOLKS had their rides pounded like you wouldn't believe. So...it may take about 3 weeks before I can get my 450SLC in the shop to begin repairs.

Oh well...like I mentioned above, I didn't get the hail angle of it...TGFT.
