How remove crank bolt?

On the aveo?

I don't have an impact wrench so I cannot remove it the easy way. How do I go about removing it. I tried using a breaker bar and 17mm socket but it just turns the crank. I have the car in 1st gear but still turns.

Put the socket and breaker bar on the bolt, make sure they are braced or held in position somehow, remove the hot wire from the distributor, and hit the starter. It should loosen the bolt.

turn engine to bottom dead center on #1. remove #1 spark plug. Fill cylinder with thick cotton rope. Turn engine until it stops. I have been doing that for many years without any problems. Cotto window sash cord (about 3/8 dia.) seems to work well.

That sounds risky (kerry's )...

Safer to do some sort of static counter force thing. Can you take the starter off and get something wedged in the flywheel? Can you drop the pan and put a block of wood against one of the crank journals? Extra work, I know

Try the top gear instead of first.

I did it in first, and 5th.

I can see the flywheel but no way of locking it..:/ If I had the money and harbor freight was close I'd invest in an electric impact wrench

Don,
The rope method is the best way. It sounds caveman but it really works.

Obviously, have enough rope sticking out to you can retrieve it.

Remember that you still have to tighten it afterwards. I'm not sure how the starter thing would help with that.

Why are you undoing the crankbolt? Most people on Mud undo the crankbolt on the 80 Series Landcruisers using the starter method.

Using the starter is a favored way of removing a Miata crankshaft bolt.

hmmm, well looking at the timing belt and seeing all of the teeth stripped from the lower portion means it wont turn the cams. I can fit the breaker bar into my jack's handle and bump the starter.

Autozone might rent impact guns.
