Tornado safety?

If an F 3-5 tornado strikes your on-slab home, are you safer in your Mercedes-Benz inside the garage of your home, or in the bathtub of the same on slab home?

Who owns a Benz where an F 3-5 tornado might strike, or a home on a slab?

Wheels, baby, wheels!

What do you think "mobile" means?

My mistake. And I should know better, having towed trailers on those effing 14.5" wheels. Do you know how hard it is to find a 14.5" tire in France?

F-4/5 you're F-d either way. Your house is pretty much a pancake and your car is pulverized/unrecognizable. That's what hit my home town 20 years ago.

I imagine bathtub would be better depending on the tub itself and where it is inside the house. If it faces an exterior wall, no. I'd rather go into a closet with as many walls in the middle of the house.

Wind gets underneath a car and sends it soaring, though most Tornado trashed homes I've seen the car is still in the garage afterwards. Maybe if you have one of those 140s with bullet proof glass.

tough choice. If it were just me and I did not have a molded fiberglass tub seven feet high I think I would get in a fetal position in the tub. Otherwise in the car and belted in. If it were a car with air bags I would have it idling. I think maybe I would get in the car and be on the move trying to avoid the storm.

ah tornado magnets at least thats what we call them around here, cuz i swear every time a tornado hits somewhere it seems to gravitate to the mobile home parks.ironic you should be talking tornados,we just got hit with a bunch of em here in western iowa, town of mapleton about 40 miles from me is pretty well leveled.and had some relations that lost homes, barns, sheds.they were only f-2 and 3 i would hate to see what an f-5 would have done.

Part of my house is on a concrete terazza floor with about 2' - 3' of crawl space underneath. I think I'm going to head underneath it if/when a tornado comes through here. It is not going to be a pretty site becaus of all the 100' tall pine trees.

Yeah, therein lies the answer. Set up a decoy mobile home a few hundred yards from your house for the tornado to hit. Should fool it every time.

If you live in a tornado prone area, an underground storm shelter is your best defense. If you go to the time and trouble of constructing one make sure it has power, toilet facilities, shelving for food, water and supplies. You never know, the big one might hit and you may need to live in it for a while.

I can't even begin to imagine what a tornado that size would do. An F1 rolled through our town a couple years ago and uprooted 100+ yo trees. The damage to the houses was from the trees rather than the wind.

My parents just got back from a 6 week trip with their camper (a mere trailer) down the East coast to the Keys. Twice, in separate parts of FL, they had tornado warnings and took shelter in the clubhouses. I didn't know FL was in tornado alley. My father joked that tornadoes don't differentiate between recreation trailers and residential trailers.

Kerry's theory may have some merit.

I think I'd just pile my billions of dollars around me and ride out the storm in my retired missile silo/ tornado shelter while lounging on my lazy boy made out of baby seal pelts. I'd probably sip some expensive bubbly from a solid gold goblet I won in a game of chance from a Saudi Prince.

Eventually I'd get bored and I'd have to play a round of golf in my indoor virtual golf course. I'd drive from hole to hole in my full F16 3D motion flight simulator. I could also watch movies in my own underground IMAX theater or go for a swim in my Olympic sized pool. From time to time I fill it with Jello because that has always been a childhood dream of mine.

Of course one would have to have enough provisions to last out at least a month in this shelter, who knows how long it might take the surrounding area to go back to normal so I could even withstand those simpletons. I'd make sure my tornado shelter chef (everyone has one of those, don't they) makes sure the 20x30 freezer, 2 20x30 coolers, a 50x75 dry storage area, and a 10x20 room( to store my favorite type of napkins) is properly stocked with the finest provisions. I'd make sure to clip all the coupons I can because I like saving money.
